The superhero genre has taken a hit at the box office in recent years, but if anyone could bring it back from near death, it would be Robert Downey Jr., at least according to Iron Man 3 director Shane Black.

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black believes Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will save the comic book movie industry

Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote his new movie, Play Dirty, Black shared his thoughts on Downey’s casting as Doctor Doom, admitting that he was just as skeptical as the fans were when Marvel Studios first announced it, but has since come around to the idea. “I think he’s going to singlehandedly reinvigorate the entire comic book movie industry with that,” Black boldly claimed.

“I mean, it seemed like at first a cynical idea, you know, ‘Oh, let’s just go back to the well of the one guy that seems to always save us.’ But it’s going to work. It’s really going to work. And he’s brought to it… I’m not at liberty to say anything, not that I know. I’m thrilled because I’m first in line to see that. I haven’t seen all the Marvel movies. I’ll see that one first,” the director added.

Downey was arguably the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for its first 10 years, with his performance as Tony Stark/Iron Man creating millions of fans. His MCU return in Avengers: Doomsday, even while in a new role, will likely bring back some fans who haven’t kept up with the franchise since his departure, which Marvel Studios is likely banking on.

Avengers: Doomsday recently wrapped principal photography earlier this month, but is expected to undergo additional filming before the movie’s release in theaters on December 18, 2026. The crossover movie will bring together most of the heavy hitters of the MCU’s current Multiverse Saga, such as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, as well as the Fantastic Four and X-Men.
