“That’s canon in the comics”: James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Includes Man of Steel’s 1 Criminally Forgotten Power Zack Snyder Blatantly Ignored

Superman is a superhero who can do everything. From lifting buildings and shooting lasers from his eyes to flying faster than a speeding bullet, yet somehow, his most unbelievable power has always been fooling everyone with a pair of glasses.

Yep, we’re talking about Superman’s coolest hypnotic glasses. While Zack Synder’s Man of Steel gave us a gritty, explosive Superman reboot, it failed to present one hilariously underused comic-book power that actually explains Clark Kent’s biggest disguise mystery.

And now, this error is being fixed by James Gunn in his upcoming Superman film, which promises to go full comic-book mode, including the return of the Hypno glasses. In comics, Clark’s glasses don’t just hide his blue eyes; they actually emit low-level hypnosis to make people forget he looks like Superman. Frankly, it’s the one thing Snyder’s version totally blanked on, but Gunn’s Superman might finally fix that.

Finally, James Gunn is fixing one of Superman’s longest-running plot holes, and yes, he’s doing it with specs, style, and a sprinkle of mind control. Gunn’s upcoming Superman is officially bringing back one of the comic’s weirdest, most criminally forgotten powers- hypno-glasses. You read it right. For anyone who’s ever screamed, “How do people not realize Clark Kent is just Superman with glasses?”, well, this one’s for you.

In an interview with ComicBook, Gunn spilled,

That’s canon in the comics… I was sitting with Tom King… and I was like, ‘You know the thing that I just don’t really know how to reconcile in myself is the glasses.’ They bothered me because I just don’t have that much suspension of disbelief.

That’s when King hit him with the deep cut. Clark’s glasses literally hypnotize people. No doubt it’s bonkers, brilliant, and absolutely real. It comes straight from Superman (Vol. 1) #330, published in 1978. It explains how the world can watch Superman give a press conference, then five minutes later, no one realizes he’s the same guy bringing donuts to the Daily Planet breakroom.

And well, Gunn doesn’t stop there. His Superman is packed with Silver Age goodness, hypno-glasses, freeze breath, robot sidekicks, and a Clark Kent who actually emotes. He’s not brooding in a dark corner; he’s crying, smiling, and yes, using his eyewear to Jedi-mind-trick the city of Metropolis.

This isn’t just a quirky fix. It’s a love letter to comic book weirdness. Gunn isn’t afraid to pull from the zaniest corners of DC lore and spin them into something heartfelt and fresh. His message? Even the most ridiculous ideas have a place, and maybe even a purpose, when handled with heart.

So next time someone says, “Glasses can’t hide your identity,” just smile and say, “Unless they’re hypno-glasses. Then, carry on.”

Our Thoughts: Superman’s hypno glasses can finally make a comic book dream work on the big screen

For decades, the biggest running joke in superhero logic was how a pair of glasses can actually fool an entire city. While Clark Kent’s disguise was less master of deception and more wishful thinking, James Gunn’s Superman is here to say, ‘Wait, there’s comic book science behind that!”

The hypno-glasses are a combination of super-hypnosis and Kryptonian lenses that convince people that mild-mannered Clark is just another clumsy reporter, not the guy punching Kaiju in Metropolis. But with Gunn bringing back the optimism, he’s making Superman fun again.

So yes, Superman might wear his undies outside, but now, thanks to Hypno glasses, he also wears the most believable disguise he’s had in years.

Superman will arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025.
