More of Ninja Gaiden 4 was revealed during the recent Xbox Games Showcase, and it seems like Team Ninja and PlatinumGames have put their rivalry aside to create a remarkable action-adventure game. There was an era in the late 2000s when these two studios released two of the best Japanese character action games, sparking numerous debates on social media as the games left fans of the genre divided.
The collaboration was primarily due to the close relationship between Hisashi Koinuma, the president of Koei Tecmo, and Atsushi Inaba, the CEO of PlatinumGames. With Xbox on board, the two studios started developing the game.

To understand the studio rivalry, we need to go all the way back to 2008, when Team Ninja released Ninja Gaiden 2. One year after that game’s release, PlatinumGames released Bayonetta, which stiffly competed with Ninja Gaiden 2.
These two games dominated the genre, and the rivalry kept fans on their toes. This is why this collaboration is huge, as these two studios are known for creating some exceptional Japanese character action games.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Team Ninja director Masakazu Hirayama explained how Ninja Gaiden 4 is a unique blend of both studios’ best qualities. When talking about a new parry system in the game, Hirayama said,
If you pull that off, enemies will drop blood essence, which you can utilize by doing an ultimate technique – We thought that was a really good fit for the gameplay cycle of Ninja Gaiden and another example of how we’ve been able to bring together the stylish qualities of Platinum while retaining that distinct Ninja Gaiden gameplay feel.
Hirayama further admitted that both studios have “very distinct and different sensibilities” when it comes to making action games; however, he thinks it is “a big accomplishment that we were able to work really closely together.” Ninja Gaiden 4 will be released worldwide for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on October 21, 2025.
