Harry Potter has found its new Lucius Malfoy, and Jason Isaacs has shared his full support for the casting in the upcoming TV reboot of the hit franchise. Isaacs portrayed the character in the film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding saga on-screen.

And the role of the pure-blood wizard will now be played by British actor and musician Johnny Flynn, who previously worked with Isaacs in the 2021 war drama Operation Mincemeat. And he has received wholehearted support from his former co-star.

The upcoming Harry Potter TV series continues to reveal its cast, adding several highly acclaimed names to its roster. The latest addition is British actor Johnny Flynn. He is cast as Lucius Malfoy, a role previously played by Jason Isaacs in the Harry Potter film series.

Lucius Malfoy is known as one of the more vile characters in the wizarding world, a wealthy pure-blood wizard with elitist views, a strong belief in blood purity, and deep disdain for Muggle-borns.

He is also a devoted follower of Lord Voldemort. Isaacs’ portrayal of the character became iconic, with the actor embodying the icy, elegant, and menacing qualities of the pure-blood wizard.

Flynn joins the growing cast, which includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Johnny Flynn’s casting as Lucius Malfoy in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series has received the approval of his former co-star and original Lucius actor, who took to Instagram to share his reaction to the news.

Apart from their now shared role in the Harry Potter universe, Isaacs and Flynn are also known for sharing the screen in the critically acclaimed war drama, Operation Mincemeat, which holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Operation Mincemeat is a war drama about a real British deception scheme to mislead the Nazis during World War II. Flynn portrayed Ian Fleming, the future James Bond author, while Isaacs played Admiral John Godfrey, the stern and skeptical head of British Naval Intelligence, who reportedly inspired James Bond’s boss, M, in Fleming’s spy novel series.

Praising his former co-star as a “brilliant actor,” Isaacs reflected on his casting in the Harry Potter TV series, saying, “I just heard that the great Johnny Flynn will be playing Mr. Malfoy in the new HBO TV series, which is sensational news for Harry Potter fans.” He also expressed his excitement to see Flynn’s take on the iconic role.

After expressing that he was “thrilled” to pass the torch to Flynn on Instagram, The White Lotus star also shared his support on X (Twitter), saying, “Couldn’t have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better.”

Flynn is also known for his roles in film, television, and theater, as well as for being the frontman of the folk-rock band Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit.
