What F1 Drivers Have Said About Brad Pitt Playing a 61-Year-Old Driver in New ‘F1’ Movie

One of the most recent movies creating a buzz around the motorsport community is the F1 movie. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, it aims to create the most immersive and realistic racing movie ever made. At a special screening during the Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton, also an executive producer, gathered the grid to watch the upcoming movie.

While most of the grid was present, Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll couldn’t attend the premiere. Apart from the F1 aspect, most racers in the movie are actual Formula 1 drivers, making it one of the most authentic movies of this era. That said, many felt it was a classic Hollywood movie, with extra drama and flair. So, what exactly did these drivers have to say about the movie?

Just like Brad Pitt, Nico Hulkenberg also wants to race in F1 at 61

With the special camera equipment and gear, the movie is definitely a cinematic marvel, and while Kosinski and Hamilton are trying their best to keep it authentic, some choices seem questionable, especially for someone who is 61 years old, playing a late 50-year-old in the movie.

Sure, there are some veterans, but not all of them are pushing like they were in their prime, so seeing someone come to F1 at that age raised some eyebrows. Brad Pitt is paired with Damson Idris, racing in F1 in a fictional F1 car. After the early premiere, the drivers shared their thoughts.

Lando Norris said:

“It was a cool story, I think an inspirational story – it had a lot of different meanings behind it all. But a cool storyline and a lot of inspiration for young people coming into it.”

Carlos Sainz also said:

“There were things that really surprised me and the team have done an outstanding job in putting together a very good Hollywood movie. Let’s see what the people think.”

The movie seemed to come off as an inspirational and accurate movie, and it received a lot of praise, but was also labeled a bit “Hollywood.” Some felt it was too American, and true fans will see through some scenes, but for those outside the sport, it would be a good time watching it. Between all these comments, it was Nico Hulkenberg, the F1 driver for Sauber, whose comments made people crackle. He said:

“It’s Hollywood, so you need to take a step back and see the broader picture,” he added, “It’s not about the fine details, but I think it’s still a new, fresh perspective. There were some good actors in there too. Brad Pitt is my role model now, my new aim is to [drive in F1 at age 61]”

This was a sarcastic jab at Brad Pitt’s age and how it’s hard to win championships at that age. Most drivers only had good things to say about the movie, and the most common criticism was how it was made in a Hollywood style. But taking out hardcore F1 followers, these changes won’t make a difference and would help with the show’s popularity a little bit more.

Hamilton opens up about his nerves ahead of the F1 movie screening

Lewis Hamilton has been part of the F1 movie since day one. He was working closely as a producer and was excited to work with Apple and see them make new cameras for the car to shoot angles that had never been done before. Despite the work being put into this, Lewis Hamilton has claimed that he was nervous to show the movie to his co-racers.

After the exclusive F1 drivers and team principals screening, when he was interviewed, Hamilton said:

“It was an incredible experience… to see what goes into making a movie right from the first treatment and first script, which was 30 pages – to then see it build into a story.” He also added, “It was great to look around and see some of the reactions from the drivers,” Hamilton said. “I really care what the drivers think and I wanted them to think highly of it… I sat in the middle and I was nervous.”

After spending years watching this movie go from just a script to a real thing is a huge deal. Hamilton’s nervousness comes from a good place and goes to show how much he cares about the work everyone has put into making the movie.

The movie is set to hit the theaters internationally on June 25 and for U.S. fans on June 27.
