Ricky Gervais has always had a penchant for riling up trouble with his unusually dry wit, sardonic humor, and borderline-offensive jokes. His favorite venue – award shows teeming with celebrities and other notable figures, of course. Since his rise to popularity with BBC’s The Office, Gervais has never missed an opportunity to crack a joke at another’s expense.

His controversial presence has, as such, made him a bold yet endearing choice to host ceremonies that are designed to honor actors, directors, and every other crew member associated with the making of a film. One of the most popular stages among the numerous award shows has been the Golden Globes, where Gervais delivered one of the most iconic introductory speeches of all time.

Every time Ricky Gervais pipes up to speak, it feels like an oncoming barrage of curse-filled exposé on Hollywood and its shining stars. Managing to get away with it each time, the comedy actor has thrown all censorship, formality, and politeness out the window. And Hollywood has always been better for it.

At the 2020 Golden Globes Awards conducted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Gervais walked onto the stage in his usual self-assured manner with an expression that warned the audience and the viewers that he was ready to spill some secrets.

What followed was a brutal 10-minute rant that dealt blows left and right and left no crumbs in the aftermath. Ricky Gervais took on every major disgrace on Hollywood’s part – starting from Felicity Huffman’s college entrance exam cheating scandal to the Jeffrey Epstein controversy, raising suspicions about his death by suicide.

In 2019, Jeffrey Epstein was all one could talk about. The financier and convicted sex trafficker was once a god among men – with deep pockets and connections that spread all across the globe, with the richest and most powerful people falling at his feet. But it didn’t take long before his kingdom came crashing down.

As of 1 March 2025, US Attorney General Pamela Bondi has released the late financier’s infamous “client list” that exposes flight logs, contact information, and names of some formidable and powerful celebrities, including Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Alec Baldwin, and Naomi Campbell. In an official statement, she claimed (via Office of Public Affairs, DoJ):

The first phase of files released today sheds light on Epstein’s extensive network and begins to provide the public with long overdue accountability.

However, even before the Department of Justice followed through on its promise of transparency and Epstein’s controversial “client list” could be made public, Gervais savagely called out Hollywood on its connection with the disgraced financier during the 2020 Golden Globes ceremony, saying – “I know he’s your friend but I don’t care!”

Previously, Epstein’s “little black book” that was widely circulated to the public in 2015 named President Donald Trump, Leonardo DiCaprio, Prince Andrew, and Bill Gates, among others.
