“Been trying to make this project for 10 years now”: 1 Marvel Movie Made Guillermo Del Toro Renounce a Steampunk Western Starring Nic Cage With a Metal Arm

Guillermo del Toro has a very interesting and respectable filmography, but there are a slew of films that the director never got to make. Be it Pacific Rim or Hellboy, del Toro has been able to deliver a very nuanced take on war, and violence, but there was one film that he never got to make, that could have possibly been pretty violent.

While del Toro directed Blade II, the director abandoned a very interesting project that might have been a box office hit. The director is known for his interest in the supernatural, fantasy, and even science fiction, which takes inspiration from anime and other modern media. Guillermo del Toro could have directed a very interesting film, based on a famous novel, had not decided to deal with Marvel instead.

Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Left Hand of Darkness‘ sounded like a great film

Guillermo del Toro‘s adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo (the Alexander Dumas novel), had a unique twist. The film was set to be called ‘The Left Hand of Darkness’, which would be set in Mexico, and would have been a steampunk gothic Western. The film could have starred Nicholas Cage in its lead role, with whom del Toro met. Regarding the time it was taking him to get the project off the ground, he said:

I’ve been trying to make this project for 10 years now. I always have these images with me. But the movie is so huge in my mind that I must find the perfect conditions to make it (…) I can wait (…).”

The project took a long time to develop and was enormous enough that Del Toro never really got around to making it. While it remains one of the most interesting unproduced films from the director, there are some other films that audiences wish del Toro had seen through.

Guillermo del Toro could have debuted Thor in the MCU

Guillermo del Toro was in talks to direct Thor in the MCU and wanted to bring more authentic Norse mythology into the character’s story. This could have resulted in a much more fantasy-leaning Thor, instead of the character essentially being a space Viking.

There were other great projects from del Toro that never saw the light of day, such as his third Hellboy film with Ron Perlman. There were also films like Silverlance, which were set to expand on his version of the Hellboy mythos, following Prince Nuada from the sequel.

Del Toro’s filmography is pretty storied – he has a lot of great hits, but looking at the list of films he did not get to make makes one wonder about how different his directorial resume would have been had things been different. From Man of Steel to an adaptation of the manga Monster, del Toro’s list of unproduced films is just as, if not more interesting than what his filmography stands as of today.
