While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has its share of great villains, there are some that fans believe could have been done a lot better. Among these villains is James Spader’s Ultron, which might have been something fans hoped would have been more menacing.

While Ultron could have been a little more serious, having James Spader essay the role was still a big deal. While the actor was not so sure about the role in the beginning, Kevin Feige was able to convince the actor by pointing out one detail about the character.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Spader revealed what it took for him to be convinced to join the MCU in Age of Ultron. The actor revealed:
I just wanted to make sure this is the right entry for me, because I realized, “Once I play this, I burned any opportunity to play anything else.” Kevin said, “It can’t get any better than playing Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron!” I said, “When you put it that way, you’re right; it’s a pretty good entry.”
While Age of Ultron might not have been as well received, it was one of the MCU’s biggest money-makers, clocking in over a billion dollars at the box office. However, Ultron could still have been a much more menacing villain, if the script was not as focused on him making jokes, and actually focused on his motivation.

While Avengers: Age of Ultron was not as well received as its predecessors or its successors, it did one thing fans could agree that the MCU could have done more. The downtime between all the fighting, where the Avengers just chilled around with each other, is something that fans enjoyed a lot, and wished there was more of.

While the original Avengers might have been permanently benched, the newer heroes could have the kind of downtime that shows audiences how they bond as a team, which could go a long way toward audiences liking these characters. Age of Ultron‘s party scene was a great exchange between characters that fans had grown to love, so it stands to reason that when such scenes are written, writers need to be careful about which characters they use.
