‘My songs are personal, I write from the heart’: The Genius Behind Adele’s ‘Skyfall’ is Even More Perplexing After She Finished it in Just 10 Minutes

Spread the love

Adele has managed to reach a lot of milestones throughout her star-studded career, and one of her most commendable ones was through Skyfall. Quite literally one of her best works to date, the track not only earned her multiple accolades but even earned the tag of being the “first good Bond song,” as the director of the titular film admitted himself.

But the more perplexing part is how she made the song in the first place. As it turns out, the mastermind singer actually wasn’t all too sure in the beginning if she would be able to write the perfect song when asked for it. But when she did finally figure out what she had to do, the genius way she did it was truly praiseworthy as she finished the song in just 10 minutes.

Adele’s genius behind Skyfall is commendable

Back when Skyfall was still in the works, Adele was called on board to work on the titular theme song for the film. But despite already being one of the best singers of all time by then, she wasn’t all too sure about how she was supposed to work on this one. If anything, her biggest concern was that her songs were personal, so she didn’t know how to curate and tame this one.

As director Sam Mendes revealed in an interview with IndieWire, “She came in, just normal as ever, with her producer. And she said ‘I’m worried that I can’t write – my songs are personal, I write from the heart, that’s how I work. I like the idea of a Bond song, but how do you write a Bond song?’” So he told her to do just that: Think in those terms and write a personal song.

For the same, Mendes told her the story they were going to materialize and shared the script with her. The same weekend, he got a call from the Hello singer as she confessed she wanted to have a go at the song after she read it in the bath. Two months later, she came up with the ultimate track as she added that personal touch to it to make it as touching as it ended up being.

Mendes shared his experience of listening to the track for the first time as:

I listened to it while I was driving all the way in from the countryside for two hours, I listened to it over and over again for like two hours. It just seemed right. And I got there and gave it to Barbara and to Daniel, who both shed a tear, because it’s the first good Bond song.

Of course, that reaction was inevitable, for the song has widely been praised for all the emotions it holds to it. When the singer herself listened to the orchestral tracking after re-recording the vocals due to voice problems back then, “she cried. Which was really touching, watching a nine-piece orchestra record alongside her vocal track.” Well, it’s Adele. Could you expect anything less?

Adele actually finished working on the song in 10 minutes

While she was originally hesitant about working on it in the first place, when the Set Fire to the Rain singer actually figured out how she was going to work on the song, she managed to do wonders as she pretty much finished working on it in 10 minutes. As her producer and collaborator Paul Epworth confessed in an interview with Hollywood.com (via EW):

Within 10 minutes, she put down most of the vocals. She had the lyrics ready in her head when she drove over. It was the most absurd thing. She’s fast, but it was really quite phenomenal.

All in all, the Rolling in the Deep singer’s remarkable talent and creative process seem to be effortlessly on full display with the story behind this track which is one of the best Bond songs to date. If anything, completing the song in just 10 minutes is a testament to her skill and artistry, making the iconic Academy Award-winning track an unforgettable part of Bond’s history.

Skyfall can currently be streamed on Prime Video.
