During the IGN Live showcase today, Polaris Team, an offshoot of the award-winning developer Variable State, premiered their new sci-fi shooter, Polaris. The stunning debut trailer showed off the game’s high-flying 4-player action, PvE multiplayer, and fully destructible environments.
Launching on Steam later this year, the game will hold a beta playtest soon. Players interested in participating can also subscribe to the game’s official newsletter right now.
Everything We Know About Polaris Set to Launch in 2024
Polaris features an intriguing sci-fi world.
Polaris is set in a region of space overtaken by the ruthless Regime. Players band together as superpowered freedom fighters to reclaim their homeworlds and destroy every enemy stronghold. Battles take place in extremely detailed, fully destructible environments, including cityscapes, wild forests, and the planet’s terrain.

Players will execute guerrilla tactics, fly through dynamic open levels, destroy enemy infrastructure, and uncover the mysteries behind the Regime’s war of conquest. Creative Director Jonathan Burroughs shared his inspiration for the game, saying
Since I first played Bullfrog’s Syndicate Wars, I’ve always dreamed of working on a game which featured hi-tech squads of futuristic soldiers, causing mayhem and destruction in an original sci-fi setting. Sprinkle in a deep appreciation for the Halo series— particularly its blend of on-foot and in-vehicle co-op action— and you can begin to get a sense of what we hope to achieve with Polaris.
The game may look like it was developed by a team of hundreds, with its AAA-looking, very polished visuals, but Burroughs was also quick to make sure everyone knows different:
We’re only a small and scrappy team of 11 people, but have been plugging away at this project since early 2023. Aided by the tools and technologies of Unreal Engine 5, Polaris Team has built a tight 4-player PvE combat game with a dynamic, destructible environment, set in our own unique sci-fi universe. With the release date arriving later this year, the team and I couldn’t be more excited to share Polaris with players worldwide!
Polaris Is Very Different From Variable State’s Previous Games
Polaris is the studio’s first multiplayer game.
Polaris marks a departure from Variable State’s previous titles like the BAFTA-winning mystery adventure Virginia. This shift led to the creation of Polaris Team, a division focused on PvE game design.

With former members from studios such as Creative Assembly, Splash Damage, Ninja Theory, Rebellion, and Cloud Imperium, the team brings extensive multiplayer combat experience to the table. Their goal was to create a game with refined combat mechanics, team-oriented gameplay, and dynamically destructible settings.
In Polaris, all in-game structures can be crushed, blown apart, and annihilated. The same goes for the natural environments and terrain, leading to a reactive and evolving combat environment. Whether decimating buildings or blowing craters in the earth, players will find the worlds of the game intricately destroyable.
