Marvel Studios has faced a massive loss this year with director Nia DaCosta’s 2023 movie, The Marvels. Released on November 10th, the film officially holds the record for having the lowest domestic opening weekend box-office collection in the history of Marvel movies. With just $47 million, the film has the worst debut in the franchise’s history. With its gigantic budget, the film is already being labeled as a box-office bomb.

On the other hand, DC is also preparing to release a film that is projected to be a disappointment. The sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 22, 2023. With the release date still roughly a month away, it has been revealed that the film is expected to earn somewhere between $32-42 million on its opening weekend. If this happens, the movie will be placed below The Marvels.

Brie Larson’s The Marvels was a massive disappointment
A still from The Marvels
It seems like actress Brie Larson‘s stardom couldn’t save The Marvels from being a major disappointment. As per Variety, the film only made about $47 million domestically and roughly $63 million internationally on its opening weekend. As per these statistics, the film had the lowest domestic opening weekend box-office collection in the history of Marvel movies.
The budget of the film is reportedly around $274 million and many publications have already labeled it as a box office bomb for Marvel Studios. This has been quite disappointing as the film’s predecessor, Captain Marvel (2019) grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the first female-led superhero film to pass the billion-dollar mark.

It’s not only Marvel Studios who are suffering this year as DC Studios’ highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is expected to be another superhero flop this year. As per sources, the film is expected to earn somewhere between $32-42 million on its opening weekend.
If these projections are true, DC will suffer from a massive loss as the budget of the film was a whopping $205 million. The film has been in production since 2019 and was slowed due to multiple reasons, including actress Amber Heard’s highly publicized court battle with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp. Despite rumors about Heard’s removal from the franchise, it has been confirmed that she will return as Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 22, 2023.
