Not a lot of people are aware that these two characters from filmmaker George Lucas’ famous franchises Star Wars and Indiana Jones were inspired by Lucas’ pet dog. The name Indiana Jones comes from an Alaskan Malamute named Indiana that Lucas had in the 1970s. The filmmaker’s pet also inspired the character of Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise.

Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise
In the thirteenth edition of Star Wars Galaxy Magazine, filmmaker George Lucas revealed that his real-life companion inspired him to come up with Han Solo’s companion in the Star Wars franchise, Chewbacca. The filmmaker revealed that he had a dog named Indiana in the 1970s,
“I had an Alaskan Malamute when I was writing the film. A very sweet dog, she would always sit next to me when I was writing. And when I’d drive around, she’d sit in the front seat. A Malamute is a very large dog – like a hundred and thirty pounds and bigger than a human being and very long-haired. Having her with me all the time inspired me to give Han Solo a sidekick who was like a big, furry dog. Not quite like a dog, but intelligent.”
Chewbacca became a fan-favorite character and his bond with Han Solo was quite heartwarming to watch for some viewers. Chewbacca was one of the Wookiees, who were fictional humanoid aliens in the Star Wars universe.

After the success of Star Wars (1977), Lucas was laser-focused on his 1981 movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. The film featured Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and the name actually came from Lucas’ dog, Indiana.
The character of Indiana Jones was partially inspired by Allan Quatermain from Sir H. Rider Haggard’s adventure novel King Solomon’s Mines. The character was also inspired by James Bond, in fact, director Steven Spielberg called it “a James Bond film without the hardware.” With five films and a prequel television series, the Indiana Jones franchise has earned over $2 billion at the global box office, becoming one of the biggest franchises in the world that has inspired countless TV shows and movies.
