Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Gets Rave Reviews and was Developed Mostly Remote, Yet Roblox Devs Threaten the Sack to Anyone Whom Doesn’t Return to the Office – Why?

Roblox is planning to move back to work in-office and is “transitioning away” from remote work. The company said that it will soon ask several employees to return to work at its San Mateo headquarters. Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki announced this decision of the company as detailed in a blog post about the future of work at Roblox.
The company has announced that all the employees will have to move to work in the office or take the severance package. Employees will need to join in-office work for three days, Tuesday to Thursday and they will be informed about the location of their roles with an email.

Roblox announced in a blog post that this decision about ending remote work was not taken lightly as this decision is significant for both employees and their families. Roblox employees have been working remotely since March 2020 and last year in May the company told the employees that they could either primarily work remotely or regularly come to the office a few days a week.

The company will no longer allow employees to work primarily remotely and the relocating employees will have the option to join for 3 days in-office or take a severance package.

Roblox CEO David Baszukci explained the company’s reasons behind the in-office work decision and how it is going to be implemented in the coming times. Baszukci stated:
As the pandemic stretched on, several companies announced that they would support 100 percent remote work for everyone, forever. During this time we had numerous deep discussions and we kept coming back to the notion that, ultimately, Roblox is an innovation company and we needed to get back to working in person.
We were also concerned about many cohorts, such as our new college graduates and people early in their careers, who typically learn through social contact and would miss out on this mentorship. And of course, this requires the presence of senior employees to provide that mentorship.
The employees will have until January 16, 2024, to decide on the relocation and the employees that decide to relocate will have to begin working at the San Mateo offices by July 15, 2024. However, the employees to decide not to relocate will have an additional 3 months, until April 15 to transition out of their roles as full-time employees, but some staff will continue working remotely.

The employees who are needed to be working remotely are not being asked to come back in-office including employees at data centers, moderators, and call centers. The employees with niche skills and significant institutional knowledge such as multi-disciplinary skills, expertise with Roblox systems and more will also not return to offices.

Roblox CEO Baszukci concluded:
While we know this is the right decision for Roblox, we recognize that it may create challenges for some of our employees. Regardless of what our remote employees decide, please know that we deeply appreciate the hard work and impact each of you has had at Roblox.
Roblox is now shifting to a three-working-day model like Amazon and other firms. It joins the long list of companies that have asked its employees to return to work in-office. This decision comes at a time when many organizations have adopted the remote work culture and allowed employees to work remotely and have achieved great results too.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was mostly developed remotely and the game has been received by critics so well. The critic reviews appreciated the game and several elements, even coining it as the “best superhero game ever made.” Spider-Man 2 currently has a Metascore of 91 and it hasn’t even been released yet. It remains to be seen how this decision affects Roblox as a company.
