Spoiler Alert !!!Spoiler Warning for George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood
House of the Dragon will be upon us soon, and this also means we might have to face the harsh truth that some characters won’t make it out alive in Season 3. While screen adaptations can certainly pull some strings and extend a character’s journey, some arcs are meant to end to push the story forward.
There are about five familiar names that we might have to bid farewell to in the next season as we anticipate their final bows. Note that these events are strictly based on the source material, and it is highly possible that the show writers will take a different route or completely change the circumstances.
That said, these are the characters who might face their own unfortunate ends in Season 3:
5. Jacaerys Velaryon Dies At the Battle of the Gullet
There’s no negotiation for this: Jace will undoubtedly die at the beginning of Season 3 during the Battle of the Gullet, the bloodiest naval conflict between the Blacks and the Greens during the Dance of the Dragons.
As the Triarchy’s fleet, led by Sharako Lohar, attacked House Velaryon’s vessels at the Gullet, Prince Jacaerys flew on Vermax to aid in the defense. Since the Triarchy has already fought with Prince Daemon and his dragon on the Stepstones, the sailors directed their attack on Jace. Vermax was wounded and sank into the sea; Jace leapt in order to escape, but he was hit by a crossbow bolt.
4. Criston Cole Perishes During the Butcher’s Ball
The death everyone awaits and would probably celebrate would perhaps be that of Criston Cole. Initially winning the hearts of fans, his betrayal made him the most loathsome character in House of the Dragon.
In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the Kingmaker met his death while marching from the Gods Eye to the Blackwater Rush, where his party was met with an army of the Blacks. He challenged them and was taken down by three arrows.
3. Helaena Targaryen’s Suicide Could Happen Very Soon
It’s hard to say how the show will depict Queen Helaena’s death, given how much they have altered her storyline. Her descent into depression and madness was prompted by the deaths of her sons: Jaehaerys, at the hands of Blood and Cheese, and Maelor, at the Sack of Bitterbridge.
Maelor was notably absent in the series, so this would be the biggest mystery for fans. Regardless, Helaena’s death could happen anytime in Season 3, which is devastating after she had become a fan-favorite character.
2. Otto Hightower Is Executed for Treason
Otto had a short exposure in Season 2 before he was dismissed by King Aegon, leaving his fate murky until further notice. Towards the end of Season 2’s finale episode, viewers caught a glimpse of Otto, which proved that he was not forgotten and that we would meet him again.
As the capture of King’s Landing seemingly occurs in Season 3, Otto will be the first one to be beheaded for treason by order of Rhaenyra.
1. Gwayne Hightower Gets Killed During the Fall of King’s Landing
Officially debuting in Season 2 (though he had a very brief scene in Season 1), Gwayne won’t likely survive the upcoming installment despite earning fans’ admiration. As much as the audience would want to watch him confront Criston over and over, his arc will likely end soon.
Like his father, Gwayne will also die during the Fall of King’s Landing. As he rushes to the stables to sound the alarm, he is caught and killed by his own commander, Luthor Largent, who remained loyal to Daemon.
