With the British Academy Film Awards finally releasing the list of nominees for the upcoming BAFTA awards, fans all over the world are left hoping that their favorite movie manages to make it over the line (and past its competitors) to walk away with the honors.
The official ceremony is just a month away, with all of it coming to an end on 16th February 2024. While the team of Conclave must be really happy with how the nominations stack up, Netflix also has many reasons to rejoice.

The premier streaming service has fared rather well in the BAFTA nominations, managing to bag a stunning 16 nominations across 4 films. Leading the pack for Netflix is Emilia Pérez, a movie that has managed to bag 11 nominations in itself.
It must be kept in mind that Conclave, which has the highest number of nominations this time around, bagged 12. The Selena Gomez starrer had a field day it seems.

While Emilia Pérez has definitely led the charts, other Netflix projects have held the roster high as well. It had been a blockbuster year for documentaries on the streaming giant, with the likes of Daughters and Will & Harper also making it to the list.
Daughters was the story of a group of incarcerated men and their daughters, sharing how they managed to bond over a dance. Will & Harper is the story of friendship and acceptance, with the duo undertaking a journey to remember.

Emilia Pérez has been embroiled in one controversy after the other
Emilia Pérez has found itself mired in numerous controversies || Netflix
While it remains to be seen how all of them fare at the official ceremony, Emilia Pérez will fancy its chances. Having already won 4 Golden Globes, the crew would believe that they have what it takes to go the distance.
What makes the feat all the more interesting (and a little shocking) is the fact that it came even when the project was embroiled in a host of controversies. With director Jacques Audiard openly admitting that he didn’t study a lot about Mexico, it comes as no shock that the movie has gone for a rather stereotypical representation of the country.

Many slammed the director for bringing to life a version of Mexico that only propagated existing stereotypes. And disrespect. Selena Gomez’s Spanish was also under the scanner.
Cracks in her fluency became too apparent in the Zoe Saldana starrer. Mexican actor and comedian Eugenio Derbez tore into the A Rainy Day in New York star, claiming that her command over the language was ‘indefensible’ in a clip from the Hablando de Cine Con podcast. The representation of transgenders also did not sit well with people around the world.

Add to that the fact that the movie, supposed to be based in Mexico, was shot in France, with zero Mexican leads, and you have the perfect recipe for a controversy. One that the movie has managed to negotiate as of now. If the trend is anything to go by, it will have a day out at the BAFTA as well.
Emilia Pérez, Daughters, Will & Harper, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl can be streamed on Netflix.
