Written by HBO Max is in the middle of one of its most stacked months of the year, which makes this a very good weekend to open the app. The August 1 library refresh dropped a stack of heavy hitters, along with some great picks that landed at the end of July.
There are plenty of options on the platform now, right down to Bob Odenkirk’s neo-Western Normal, which just landed on August 14. Moreover, DC Studios’ Lanterns premieres this Sunday, August 16, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as the intergalactic cops pulled into a murder investigation in small-town Nebraska.
However, if you only have room for a couple of films, here are the three best new movies on HBO Max this weekend, ranked.
3. Barbarian (2022)

A woman arrives at a rental house in Detroit on a rainy night and discovers a stranger already living there. That is how Barbarian begins, and it is honestly the most you should know going in. Director Zach Cregger, who later made Weapons, keeps pulling the floor out from under you. The moment you settle on what kind of film this is, it turns into something else entirely.
Georgina Campbell holds the whole thing together, with Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long doing excellent work around her. The first half hour is almost unbearably tense, purely because you cannot guess what is coming. It is one of the best horror movies of the last decade, and it has been sitting on HBO Max since August 1. It lands third here purely because it is the narrowest pick of the three. Some of its imagery is punishing enough that many viewers might want to sit this one out.
2. Sicario (2015)

Sicario deals with the grim reality of the United States’ war on drugs. The film focuses on FBI Agent Kate Mercer, played by Emily Blunt, who teams up with Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro’s task-force operatives to take out a drug cartel chief along the U.S.-Mexico border. Denis Villeneuve paints a very dark picture of the war on drugs, where the ethical boundaries are breached.
This morally questionable war has taken its toll on both sides. The unchecked American aggression even taunts the principled FBI agent played by Blunt. She slowly realizes she is the only one still playing by rules that stopped applying long ago. It was also an early calling card for Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, and it joined HBO Max on August 1. It edges ahead of Barbarian because its darkness is the kind you can watch, with Villeneuve’s slow-tightening tension giving you something to grip onto even at its ugliest.
1. The Drama (2026)
One of the year’s most talked-about romantic drama movies arrived on HBO Max on July 31. This A24 black comedy from director Kristoffer Borgli stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as a happily engaged couple whose wedding week unravels after an unexpected revelation. Both leads deliver some of the most adventurous work of their careers, and the film has been praised for walking a daring tonal line between romance, comedy, and unease.
The Drama has a provocative twist that has sparked controversy and divided audiences. So brace yourself for this bold attempt. It takes the top spot as the freshest title of the three, and the ending is built to be argued about the moment the credits roll.
