TV shows don’t always end with a quiet final episode. Sometimes a beloved series gets a proper send-off on the big screen, or a big streaming premiere, in the form of a feature-length movie. These movies are the result of either a creative decision or a fan movement to provide them one last adventure with their favorite characters.

Some were true finales, while others eventually turned out to be bonus chapters. The latest example is Netflix’s Heartstopper Forever, the movie conclusion to the hit queer teen romance, which lands on July 17, 2026. Here are 10 TV shows that closed their stories with a feature-length movie, including that emotional Heartstopper farewell.

10. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

CBS’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation ran for 15 seasons from 2000, turning forensic science into must-watch primetime television. The Las Vegas team, led by Gil Grissom and later others, solved gruesome cases using evidence and lab work. The show spawned several spin-offs along the way.

When the show finally wrapped, it did so with a feature-length TV movie called CSI: Immortality in 2015. The two-hour special brought back original stars William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger, reuniting Grissom and Catherine Willows one last time. It tied up long-running character threads and gave the flagship series a proper goodbye.

9. Breaking Bad

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)

Breaking Bad is often considered one of the greatest TV shows ever made. The AMC followed Bryan Cranston‘s chemistry teacher Walter White, who turns to a life of crime and slowly transforms into the ruthless kingpin Heisenberg. The show ended in 2013, but fans still wondered what happened to Jesse Pinkman, Walt’s partner, who escaped in the finale.

Vince Gilligan answered that question with El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie in 2019. Released on Netflix, the film follows Aaron Paul‘s Jesse as he tries to escape his past and build a new life on the run. It works as a satisfying epilogue, giving one of the show’s most tragic characters a real ending.

8. Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek Generations (1994)

Star Trek: The Next Generation brought the sci-fi franchise back to television in 1987 and became a huge success over seven seasons. Set aboard the USS Enterprise-D, it followed Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew as they explored the galaxy.

Soon after the show ended in 1994, the cast jumped to the big screen with Star Trek Generations. The film is famous for bringing together two captains, as Stewart’s Picard teams up with William Shatner’s Captain Kirk from the original series. While not a definitive ending, it served as the movie debut for the Next Generation crew and passed the torch from one Star Trek era to the next on the big screen.

7. Deadwood

Deadwood: The Movie (2019)

Timothy Olyphant’s Deadwood was a gritty Western set in a lawless 1870s mining town in South Dakota. Praised for its rich characters and profanity-laced dialogue, it followed figures like saloon owner Al Swearengen and lawman Seth Bullock. Sadly, the show was cancelled in 2006 after three seasons, leaving its story unfinished and fans frustrated for years.

Thankfully, HBO finally gave it closure with Deadwood: The Movie in 2019. Set about ten years after the series, it reunited the original cast, including Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant, for one last chapter. The film wrapped up several storylines and gave the acclaimed show the proper farewell it had always deserved.

6. Prison Break

Prison Break: The Final Break (2009)

Prison Break was a thriller built on an impossible idea. The Fox show follows Wentworth Miller‘s Michael Scofield as he deliberately gets himself sent to prison to break his wrongly convicted brother out. We were shocked to find out that he had the escape plan tattooed all over his body. The series ran from 2005 and delivered plenty of twists across its run.

Prison Break: The Final Break, released in 2009, is a direct-to-video film that fills in the gap during the show’s final episodes. It focuses on Michael and Sara’s wedding day turning into one more desperate escape mission after Sara is arrested. However, it wasn’t the ‘finale’ finale, as the series came back for a final season in 2017.

5. Downton Abbey

This ITV show was a wildly popular British period drama following the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in a grand Yorkshire estate. Downton Abbey ran for six seasons and became a global phenomenon. Unlike most shows here, Downton didn’t stop at one movie; it got three.

The 2019 movie reunited the cast for a royal visit, and 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era took the family to the south of France while a film crew shot at the house. The trilogy closed with Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale in 2025, set in the 1930s, which served as a heartfelt tribute to the late Maggie Smith and a fitting goodbye to the Crawleys.

4. Peaky Blinders

BBC’s Peaky Blinders followed the Shelby family, a ruthless gang running Birmingham’s streets after World War I. Led by the sharp and dangerous Tommy Shelby, played brilliantly by Cillian Murphy, the show became a stylish, hugely popular crime saga over six seasons, ending in 2022.

Its story continued with Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which arrived on Netflix in 2026. Set in 1940 during World War II, the film pulls Tommy out of self-imposed exile after his son gets caught up in a Nazi plot. Written by creator Steven Knight, it gives Murphy’s iconic gangster a bigger and more cinematic send-off.

3. Heartstopper

Heartstopper Forever (2026)

Heartstopper became a cultural phenomenon when it debuted in 2022, winning hearts with its sweet and honest take on young queer love. Based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, it follows Charlie and Nick, two British schoolboys whose friendship blossoms into romance.

After three seasons, the story concludes not with a fourth season but with a feature film, Heartstopper Forever, arriving July 17, 2026. Written by Oseman and adapted from the final graphic novel volume, the movie tests Nick and Charlie’s relationship as Nick heads to university and the couple faces a long-distance future. The trailers have already promised a more grown-up tone, giving the beloved series a proper goodbye as its characters step into adulthood.

2. Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars: The Movie (2014)

Kristen Bell starred as the title character in the clever teen detective series, Veronica Mars, that first aired in 2004. Bell’s character is a whip-smart high schooler who moonlights as a private investigator in the wealthy but corrupt town of Neptune. The show earned a devoted cult following but was cancelled after three seasons.

Its fans refused to let it die, though. In 2014, a Veronica Mars movie was made possible by a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign that fans funded themselves. Bell returned as Veronica, now a lawyer drawn back to Neptune to solve a murder involving old faces. The film proved how loyal the fanbase was and even led to a later revival series on Hulu.

1. Firefly

Serenity (2005)

Firefly is one of the most beloved cancelled shows in TV history. Created by Joss Whedon, the space Western followed the ragtag crew of the ship Serenity. As fans began to enjoy the adventures of this group of misfits, Fox cancelled the show after just a handful of episodes. It sparked a major outrage from fans.

However, the passionate fanbase helped bring the story to the big screen with Serenity in 2005. The film reunited the entire cast, led by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, and answered major mysteries the show never got to explore. It gave Firefly the cinematic ending fans craved and remains proof that a devoted audience can revive a cancelled favorite.
