10 Incredible Animated Shows Canceled on Brutal Cliffhangers That Still Hurt

Spread the love

It is already tough to cope with cliffhangers in a season of a series. The wait is almost unbearable. However, it is really unfortunate and troubling when a series gets cancelled on a cliffhanger. The audience is engulfed in thoughts, wondering what could have happened. This feels even worse when the nostalgic cartoon shows are treated with a similar uncertainty. In this list, we will be discussing the highly appreciated animated series that were left on a cliffhanger.

From the 2011 adaptation of ThunderCats to Green Lantern: The Animated Series, which got only one season, here are the worst cliffhanger endings of the most beloved animated series.

1. Teen Titans Already Had an Ending Penned

Every millennial would remember watching Teen Titans growing up. However, it was one day that the whole fun stopped. The episode was Things Change that became the very final in its run. This season’s entry may have been a cliffhanger ending for all the viewers, but the creators knew that the current season would be the last. The ending was Beast Boy being confused and over Terra’s return, who had become a statue. However, that mystery was never solved.

So instead of giving a strong cliffhanger that might give you hope to see the character again, Teen Titans had an open ending. The title of the episode itself was meant to describe how Things Change in life, and not everything can be resolved. However, while fans called the episode anticlimactic, it should be noted that Teen Titans Go!, a comic series, had an answer to the story in issue #51. It introduces Terra’s brother, explaining the further storyline.

Per some online speculations, the show was cancelled due to low ratings and declining toy sales.

2. Megas XLR Almost Got a Revival

Rearview Mirror, Mirror in the second season was a two-part episode that left a beautiful story unresolved. While the characters were seen fighting their counterparts from another reality, many answers were left unsaid as the episode ended with the trio hearing a voice from the villain Magnanimus.

However, in the comments section of a YouTube video by Secret Galaxy, co-creator Jody Schaeffer stated that he had plans to bring another season of the highly acclaimed series. He had mentioned,

Feels good knowing we weren’t completely forgotten. Fun fact: due to international sales and iTunes, Megas made its money back! We got greenlit for a reboot a few years ago. Then David Zaslav took over WB and shut the whole thing down again. Wait. That fact isn’t fun at all.

Megas XLR first hit the screens back in 2004 and had only two seasons.

3. Infinity Train Left Many Questions Unanswered

Towards the end of Cartoon Network‘s Infinity Train, we see the two leading characters reconcile their friendship. They were even shown getting off the train and stepping into New York. However, many questions were still unattended. Infinity Train again became a series that has loose ends, as the creators had planned around eight seasons.

It should be noted that the series concluded in just four seasons. Per the outlet, the show was cancelled due to changing child-programming demographics and low viewership.

4. Green Lantern: The Animated Series Has Only One Season

If you can recall, Green Lantern: The Animated Series gave a proper climax to the audience. With the departure of a few key characters, a battle being won by the Green Lantern Corps, many main plot lines were solved. However, the most frustrating aspect of the show was Razer’s search for Aya, an AI who sacrificed herself to save the universe. Something that the fans hoped to see in a future season.

What was more shocking was that even though the show was loved by a lot of viewers, it was canceled right after the first season.

5. Sym-Bionic Titan: Dramaless Cliffhanger but Unresolved Potential

The series that ran from 2010 to 2011 did not have a dramatic cliffhanger, but did it not give proper answers to many mysteries, such as the reboot of Octus, as well as General Modula’s feared character. Basically, the whole show felt rushed, and its ending seemed unsatisfying.

Sym-Bionic may have had a great run, but the climax that the viewers got did not explore each aspect of the show.

6. Final Space a Victim of WBD Merger

Final Space totally became a victim of the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery. This show has to have the most frustrating cliffhangers. Final Space’s finale did not give an answer to the match between the protagonist and the antagonist. As seen in Episode 36, The Devil’s Den, the villain Invictus wins, with no explanation of what the team of heroes would do next. We see the cute Mooncake being captured, and also a rift being opened in space.

However, that was it, nothing was brought to the screen later.  Interestingly, CBR reported that Olan Rogers announced that Warner Bros had allowed him to have a proper ending for Final Space through a graphic novel. The graphic novel, titled Final Space: The Final Chapter, is set for release on June 9, 2026. It will be 660 pages long and is currently available for pre-order, with over 39,000 copies already sold.

7. Spectacular Spider-Man Cliffhanger or Loose Ends?

The Spectacular Spider-Man received orders for two seasons totaling 26 episodes, though creator Greg Weisman had planned for five seasons.

Interestingly, the episode Final Curtain is already a nod to the conclusion. Norman was shown to have died, with Peter and Gwen realizing that they love each other. However, Harry’s angle was a bit unsatisfactory.

In his X post, Wesiman explained that the show had “No cliffhanger. Loose ends, certainly, but no cliffhanger.”

The show in question first aired in 2008 and had two seasons.

8. Inside Job Season 3 Was Highly Anticipated

Reagan was seen turning to ROBOTUS, who led her to a room full of simulated versions of every conceivable reality. She was also seen filling in Ron’s subconscious with a backstory where she doesn’t exist. Soon, we realize that the series consisted of just one reality. She then heads into the world where Reagan accepts that she will be happy if her man is happy. However, in Robes’ lair, we see that the things under the hood aren’t humans. We hear the entities say time to begin Project X37.

Shockingly, that was it. Nothing came to fruition later. While hope was still high to watch a third season of Inside Job, Netflix eventually canceled the show right after the second season.

9. Generator Rex Had an Abrupt Cancellation

Towards the end of Generator Rex, we see Rex and Circe dating, and Caesar, Gabriel, and Pete working on a new project. It should be noted that the ending may seem like a cliffhanger, but the series had completed its main arc way before the abrupt cancellation of the show.

The arc of Van Kleiss was purposely left by its creators in the hope of a future season.

10. Unresolved Plotpoints of ThunderCats (2011) Teased a Future

ThunderCats has always been a series filled with high nostalgia. Be it the classic that was released in 1985 or the one everyone enjoyed in 2011. However, the latest entry dissatisfied many viewers. In this series, we see Lion-O and the ThunderCats on their quest to seek Power Stones to defeat Mumm-Ra. The character arcs of Pumyra and the fate of New Thundera did not meet a satisfactory ending.

If only another season had hit the tv screens, creator Dan Norton had a lot in mind.
