The popularity of fantasy stories is unwavering. With fantasy books getting adapted for the big screen, fans are more curious than ever to see how it all pans out. Brandon Sanderson’s beloved Mistborn: The Final Empire is one of the most acclaimed modern fantasy sagas, and it is in the very early stages of development at Apple TV+ (via THR).

Similar to how Kevin Feige is gradually building the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we believe the Mistborn universe deserves a similar treatment with a strong, authoritative figure at the helm to call the shots. The studio would need a visionary producer-filmmaker who understands both epic world-building and character-driven narratives. The right creative leader would have to translate Sanderson’s intricate magic systems, political intrigue, and evolving timelines into a cohesive long-term plan.

Here are ten storytellers perfect to take on the role of “Kevin Feige” of Apple TV+’s Mistborn adaptation.

1. Rian Johnson

If Rian Johnson can bring a chapter of Star Wars to life on the big screen, we are sure he can handle the world of Mistborn adeptly. He understands layered storytelling and can masterfully bring the magical aspects alive. Moreover, his experience working on the mystery franchise Knives Out further makes him a great candidate for this job.

Johnson can easily decode the complex narrative structures and Sanderson’s carefully engineered magic systems to really land the long-term plot twists in every production. Mistborn’s world is built on political deception, secret identities, and shifting alliances, all aspects that perfectly align with Johnson’s capabilities.

Mistborn is not all politics and magic. The universe is filled with intriguing characters like Vin, Kelsier, and Elend, who demand emotional depth with epic stakes. Johnson can strike a great balance with these themes as well.

2. Donna Langley

While primarily known as a studio executive rather than a director, Donna Langley’s experience in building large-scale franchises makes her an intriguing candidate to architect a Mistborn universe. She has overseen the production of popular franchises like the Fast & Furious series and the modern Jurassic World films. Singular directors and filmmakers can handle the story aspects and creative vision, whereas Langley can handle the franchise development and balance creative planning. Even though she is currently at Universal, things might change once her contract is up for renewal.

Sanderson’s Cosmere storytelling branches out into multiple timelines and interconnected narratives, which would require minute oversight and a long-term production strategy. Langley could bring the right filmmakers together, ensure they maintain tonal consistency, and decide how each installment contributes to a broader narrative arc.

3. Joseph Kosinski

If Mistborn wishes to blend spectacle action and in-depth storytelling, Joseph Kosinski is the guy for the job. His work on Top Gun: Maverick proved the naysayers wrong and established his rare ability to deliver a balanced story with action and human emotion.

Kosinski also excels at building immersive visual worlds, as seen in Tron: Legacy and Oblivion. Mistborn requires a vivid kind of visual imagination that Kosinski has already demonstrated. Perhaps most importantly, Kosinski’s disciplined filmmaking style could bring clarity to Mistborn’s complex action sequences. He could properly simplify the physics-defying mechanics of Allomancy with choreographed visuals.

4. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo

When everything else failed, Kevin Feige himself turned to the brilliant Russo Brothers to steer the MCU towards success. If given the helm completely, imagine the magic they can weave with a franchise. Mistborn could be that franchise that thrives under their visionary leadership.

Anthony and Joe Russo are masters at managing massive ensembles and long-term narratives, hence perfect for Mistborn’s multi-era structure and large cast. The Russo Brothers have shown their expertise in working with world-shattering stakes. Moreover, their production company, AGBO, also specializes in cross-platform storytelling, making them well suited to oversee films and series across Apple TV+.

5. Jon Favreau

Jon Favreau is another creative architect who can do justice to the Mistborn universe. After launching the Iron Man film that kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Favreau went on to revolutionize streaming storytelling with The Mandalorian for Disney+. World-building and technical intricacies are no big deal for Favreau, who can cool-headedly work on a massive project like this one.

A Mistborn universe under Favreau could skillfully combine cutting-edge visual effects with dynamic storytelling. His understanding of fandom culture and franchise expansion are further benefit that would help the adaptation.

6. Matt Reeves

Given how Mistborn is dystopian and has a bit of a darker edge to the story, Matt Reeves’ aesthetic approach could be the finishing touch that breathes life to the adaptation. Fans loved his interpretation of The Batman which had a dark, atmospheric approach.

Reeves is particularly skilled at exploring morally complex heroes. Characters like Kelsier would be well interpreted under his leadership. What’s more, Reeves would pay extra attention to immersive world-building with grounded realism when envisioning the Final Empire. This will help in showing the true impact of political oppression and rebellion in the story.

7. Chad Stahelski

How can the enchanting world of Mistborn be adapted without blending the essence of action and well-choreographed fights? This is where Chad Stahelski shines brightest. Under his leadership, Mistborn’s battles could become some of the most distinctive action set pieces in fantasy television. As the director behind the John Wick series, Stahelski has revolutionized modern action in cinema.

The central Allomantic combat in the story demands innovative choreography and precise visual storytelling where Stahelski’s background as a stunt coordinator would come into play. He can skillfully design action sequences that feel both real and visually spectacular.

8. Deborah Chow

Another gem of a filmmaker from the Star Wars universe, Deborah Chow, can also lead the way for Mistborn. Her work on The Mandalorian and her leadership of Obi-Wan Kenobi prove how she can guide a large franchise while giving every character adequate focus.

Chow balances mythological storytelling with emotional intimacy that would be important for a few of the central Mistborn narratives. Chow has also worked well with episodic storytelling that hints at her ability to chart out a franchise with ease.

9. Gareth Edwards

With Godzilla and Rogue One under his belt, Gareth Edwards can deliver epic scale with remarkable thought and nuance. He can craft visually stunning worlds while keeping the story rooted in human story arcs.

Given how Mistborn is set in a decaying empire ruled by a god-like tyrant, Edwards’ talent for atmospheric storytelling could be well-used. He is great at visualizing power structures and the small rebels who challenge them, perfect for capturing the haunting beauty of Mistborn’s ashy world.

10. Peter Jackson

Last but not least, Peter Jackson is another great man for the job. Sanderson has already claimed how he loves Jackson’s work (via Brandon Sanderson blog). The New Zealand director famously brought J. R. R. Tolkien’s legendary saga to the big screen, which collectively redefined modern fantasy filmmaking. He did not let the dense literary worlds intimidate him and skillfully translated the story into epic cinematic experiences.

Another advantage Jackson brings is his mastery of immersive world-building. Mistborn’s ash-filled skies, gothic architecture, and mist-covered cities would benefit immensely from this level of visual craftsmanship. Jackson also understands the importance of respecting source material while adapting it for screen audiences.

The above filmmakers have an eye for detail and a hunger to make the final output look more marvellous than ever. They are indeed well equipped to bring the Mistborn universe to life.

Why would the Mistborn universe benefit from a Kevin Feige–style creative leader?

A single guiding voice could keep Brandon Sanderson’s complex timelines, magic systems, and character arcs consistent across multiple films and series.

Which filmmaker might best translate Mistborn’s intricate Allomancy magic to screen?

Directors experienced with visually inventive action, like Chad Stahelski or Joseph Kosinski, could make the physics-bending combat feel both cinematic and clear.

Could a studio executive lead the Mistborn universe instead of a director?

Yes—someone like Donna Langley could coordinate multiple filmmakers while maintaining a long-term franchise roadmap.

What makes Mistborn particularly suited for a long-form cinematic universe?

The interconnected Cosmere storytelling by Brandon Sanderson spans eras, characters, and political conflicts that naturally lend themselves to multi-project world-building.

Which studio is adapting Mistborn?
