When saying “Big Three”, it often refers to the big three shonen anime we are all aware of. However, there are, of course, more genres other than Shonen. One of the genres that has been gaining rise in popularity a lot is Isekai anime genre.

Here’s the list containing anime that can be part of the Isekai Big Three. These anime are shortlisted on the basis of how loved they are by fans, and how they stick to the concept of Isekai. Let’s dive in.

1. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Mushoku Tensei is the name that can’t be ignored when talking about Isekai. While it is more recent compared to others in this life, this anime sticks to the concept of Isekai like no other. The core essence of the Isekai genre is showing a “second chance at life” after all.

Rudeus is a good-for-nothing middle-aged man who has ruined his life in every way possible. He is NEET (not in education or training), lives in a single room in his parents’ house. While his family constantly tried to help him, he just kept going down the spiral. Eventually, he crosses the line by skipping his parents’ funeral. In response to that, his brothers throw him out of the house.

Now homeless and purposeless, he wanders the streets of Tokyo until he comes across a group of high school students who are about to die because of a truck accident. He saves them, getting hit in turn, and wakes up in the body of a newborn child in a fantasy world. The season 3 of this anime is coming soon, making it perfect time to binge.

What makes this anime so great to be a contender for the Big Three is the fact that it doubles down on the concept of giving a second chance. Rudeus is not suddenly overpowered; he is as normal as it gets, but he decides that he will live properly this time, fix himself. Among other amazing anime, it can be watched on Amazon Prime right now.

2. Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World

Beatrice and Subaru from Re:ZERO Credit: White Fox

Re:ZERO is yet another title that sticks to the second-chance trope. Subaru is a normal high school student, except that he, too, is a NEET. He is clearly unsatisfied with his life, for which the reason is shown later in the anime, and he suddenly gets summoned to another world. Classic.

However, one thing that makes this anime stand out is how the main character’s powers work. He doesn’t have an insanely powerful cheat skill that obeys him. What he has is the ability to return to checkpoints when he dies; other than that, he is a powerless person in a world full of characters who can level countries if they want to.

The goal of the main character in this anime is simple: he wants to lead a good life with the people he loves. Things keep getting in his way, as he is roped in with the events regarding an ancient, powerful evil witch. This anime is getting another season in a few days, making it worth a binge.

3. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!

Megumin, Darkness, Kazuma, and Aqua from Konosuba | Credit: Studio Deen

This anime is a bit of a unique addition in this list, as it leans into the comedy aspect of the Isekai genre. Kazuma is yet another Japanese high school student who, unlike many others, doesn’t die by getting hit by a truck, nor is he summoned to another world deliberately. In fact, he dies of shock, because he “might” get hit by a tractor.

Following that, he meets Aqua, a goddess, who gives him many choices to choose a weapon or skill that he’d use to defeat the demon king. To her surprise, he chooses her. This anime is packed with comedy, while still advancing the plot of eliminating the demon king.

4. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Slime Isekai is a well-known anime among fans who love this genre. A normal salary man dies while saving his coworker from a knife attack. He then wakes up in the body of a slime, and slowly grows more and more powerful.

What makes this anime unique is the fact that it puts in a great deal of effort in creating a convincing fantasy world where every element matters. The main character, Rimuru, himself focuses more on growing his nation than defeating a demon king. That said, he is no less than a demon king in his own anime.

5. No Game No Life

Sora and Shiro from No Game No Life | Credit: Madhouse

This anime doesn’t focus on the “second chance” trope and breaks many rules, but rather, it focuses on the “a world where you belong” trope. Sora and Shiro are two stepsiblings who only think about games. They are known in the real world as “Blank”, or “   “, because they do not have a gamer tag.

One day, they receive a strange message that asks them if they think they belong in the world, with a hyperlink that leads them to a chess game. As described by them in the very first episode, it was the most difficult chess game that they had played against anyone in their lifetime, even if they won.

Upon winning, they are teleported to a world called “Disboard”, where anything and everything is decided by games. Want to win a court case? You can defeat the person in a game and win. This is the perfect world for the siblings, and they decide to conquer it.

6. Bâan: The Boundary of Adulthood

Rin from Bâan: The Boundary of Adulthood | Credit: Studio Daisy

Bâan: The Boundary of Adulthood is a creative project created by Garnt Maneetapho, who goes by the name of “Gigguk” on YouTube. The theme of Isekai in this anime is two-way, as a character from a fantasy world travels to modern Tokyo, and a character from modern Tokyo travels to that said fantasy world.

What sets this anime apart is the fact that it focuses on the concept of “home”. If you go to the place that you’ve always wanted to be, what feelings are in your heart regarding what home is? Daichi travels to the fantasy world and immediately discovers a new home. But that is not the same for Rin. This is a short anime and is available to watch on YouTube.

7. The Eminence in Shadow

Cid Kagenou from The Eminence in Shadow | Credit: Nexus

So far, for most of the shows other than No Game No Life and Bâan, the common theme is that the protagonist is practically a good-for-nothing in his original world. However, that isn’t the case for Minoru. The protagonist of this anime wanted to be the “eminence in shadow”, a person who is all-powerful and manipulates forces from the shadows.

In order to achieve that, he trained hard from a young age, to the point that he was able to fight an armed soldier from special forces, while he himself was still in high school. In that madness of wanting more and more power, he, following the trope, gets hit by truck-kun. However, for his good luck, magic is real in this new world that he was born in, and he used the skills he had transferred from the magic-less world to truly become the Eminence in Shadow.

Among many other great shows, this anime can be watched on Hulu right now.

8. GATE

Rory, Youji, Lelei La, Tuka Luna, and Shino from GATE | Credit: A-1 Pictures

What happens when the protagonist being isekaid is not a person, but the Japanese military itself? This anime is unique in that very way. A gate opens in the middle of Japan that leads to another world, and it is instantly invaded by the Japanese military.

While this anime is also full of power fantasy tropes, the main weapon of choice in this anime remains a gun. It is a very refreshing take on the genre, focusing on the diplomacy aspect as well.

9. Cautious Hero

Seiya and Ristarte from Cautious Hero | Credit: White Fox

This is yet another isekai anime leaning into the Comedy genre as well. Seiya is a normal person from Japan who is summoned by a goddess to save the world. However, Seiya is unique. He is, as the name of the anime suggests, overly cautious.

Even if he is fighting a slime, he would drop magical attacks capable of destroying the demon king himself. This anime also touches on why he is alive, in a heartbreaking flashback. It is a perfect single-season watch, offering a very unique yet classic take on Isekai.

10. Sword Art Online

Kazuto, Asuna, Keiko, and Rika from Sword Art Online | Credit: A-1 Pictures

Sword Art Online is yet another anime that can’t be overlooked when talking about the Isekai genre. It too is unique in its own way. Many people, in the hype of it, start playing a virtual reality game called Sword Art Online, which is very close to realism. However, it turns out that they are all stuck in the game, and if they die in the game, they die in real life.

The primary protagonists must beat all 100 floors of the game in order to escape from it, as their bodies outside in the real world are in a coma-like state.

What qualifies an anime to be in the “Isekai Big Three”?

Much like the original Shonen Big Three (Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece), claiming a spot in the Isekai Big Three comes down to a combination of immense global popularity, lasting cultural impact, and how well it defines the genre’s tropes.

What is the deal with “Truck-kun,” and why is it so famous?

“Truck-kun” is the anime community’s affectionate (and hilarious) nickname for the rogue commercial trucks that seemingly exist solely to run over protagonists and trigger their reincarnation into another world.

Did the Isekai genre exist before the modern boom?

Yes! Classics from the 90s and early 2000s like Inuyasha, Digimon Adventure, The Vision of Escaflowne, and Spirited Away are all foundational Isekai.

Which three isekai anime from this would you put into your big-three? Let us know in the comments.
