David Fincher‘s long-rumored U.S. remake of Squid Game has received an update, even though Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed the project. This comes over four months after the hit South Korean show concluded its three-season run.
What is the latest update on the Squid Game remake?
According to a new listing on the Film and Television Industry Alliance website, the spin-off will reportedly be titled Squid Game: America. The listing also claimed that Netflix is planning to start production on the potential show on February 26, 2026, in Los Angeles.
In addition, the listing also mentioned the U.S. remake’s creative team, which will reportedly consist of Fincher, original series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, Kim Ji-yeon, Zeus Zamani, and Rhett Giles as producers. Dennis Kelly was also listed as its writer, while Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett was the only cast member mentioned. At the end of Squid Game’s third and final season, viewers were treated to a surprise cameo from Blanchett, who appeared as a recruiter for the American games after being seen playing the familiar game of ddakji with a potential player.
Fincher’s English-language remake of Squid Game was first reported over a year ago. Before Blanchett’s cameo, the streamer hadn’t made any announcements acknowledging the project. However, according to Hwang, the cameo isn’t actually related to the U.S. remake, seemingly hinting that he might not be part of the project’s development process.
“Actually, no, not at all. It’s not related to that,” Hwang clarified. “Honestly, I haven’t heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game. I have heard the rumors, of course, though. But again, it was just the ending that I wanted for Season 3.”
