Prime Video has greenlit a Sex Criminals TV show.
Sex Criminals is an Image Comics series written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Chip Zdarsky. The series officially launched in 2013 and ran for 31 issues over six volumes. It centers around two people who discover they have the power to stop time when they have sex, an ability they then use to rob banks.
What do we know about the Sex Criminals show?
Per Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios has given a Sex Criminals TV show an eight-episode order. It comes from writers Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, and Tze Chun. Nanjiani, who is married to Gordon, will also star in the show.
The solicitation for the comic series’ first issue reads, “Suzie’s a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night she meets Jon… who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex-having, time-stopping, couple would do: they rob banks.”
Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap is involved with the show, as Sun and Dani Gorin will executive produce Sex Criminals for the production company alongside Gordon, Nanjiani, and Dani Melia for Winter Coat Films, and Fraction and Zdarsky. Louie Hayes will serve as producer.
“Sex Criminals is the exact kind of thing Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in weird places,” Gordon and Nanjiani said in a statement. “From the moment LuckyChap brought us Matt and Chip’s comic book, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to screen and are so excited to do that alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video.”
Fraction and Zdarsky added, “We’re overjoyed to have such talented people bring our dumb comic to life.”
Amazon MGM Studios’ Peter Friedlander said, “Sex Criminals is bold, hilarious, and wildly original, with a love story at its core that feels both deeply human and completely unexpected. “Emily, Kumail, and Tze have brought a fresh, and emotionally grounded take to this incredible property. With our collaborators at LuckyChap, Winter Coat Films, and comic book creators Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, we’re thrilled to bring this unforgettable world and its characters to our global Prime Video audience.”
