What Star Trek series is getting a sequel?
Star Trek: Red Shirts, the comic series originally released in 2025 by IDW, is getting a new series. The new comic series is expanding the world of the Red Shirts comic, with a five-issue limited series called Star Trek: Red Shirts – Ghost of the 21st Century. The new series will be written by legendary comic scribe Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe), with art from Scott Buoncristiano (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Dark Room).
The new series will debut on July 22, 2026, with pre-orders going up on June 15, 2026. Local comic shops and online stores will have the series on sale. Check out art of the various covers for the first issue below:
The original Red Shirts series follows the story of the crew of the U.S.S. Warren, who are stranded on the snow-ridden planet Arkonia 89. The group face threats not only from enemies on the planet, but the elements and more. The original series was written by Christopher Cantwell (Star Trek: Defiant), wnt with art by Megan Levens (Star Trek).
“On the Federation’s farthest frontier, red shirts don’t just die—they’re used. When conscripted security grunt Harry Deubert finds contraband hidden inside a fallen comrade’s body, he uncovers Section Null—a secret Starfleet directorate turning disposable red shirts into assets in a sprawling criminal conspiracy. Teaming with Lyna Taval, an Andorian officer with her own covert agenda, Deubert digs too deep…and becomes a target,” reads the official synopsis for the upcoming series.
“I’ve not been able to enlist in Starfleet until now, but I can promise this new volume of Red Shirts is going to leave a very big bruise on Star Trek,” said Duggan in a statement. “The Romulans have an insidious plot to destabilize the Federation and it’s my privilege to help them and drop as many bodies as we can along the way. Set your phasers for fun, and see you in space.”
“I was over a month into a Star Trek rewatch when I was asked to do Red Shirts,” Buoncristiano said. “It’s one thing to watch this universe, but it’s another to be able to draw and create within it. Collaborating with Gerry Duggan and the crew at IDW is a blast, and I can’t wait for readers to see what we do to these poor, doomed Red Shirts.”
