Chris Pratt’s newest film has rocketed to the top of the 2026 box office charts, with its global debut placing it among all-time animated records. The domestic haul and overseas performance together signal where the Nintendo franchise stands heading into the summer movie season.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens big domestically and globally
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened to $130.9 million domestically over its three-day Easter weekend across 4,252 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.
The five-day domestic haul reached $190 million, making it the biggest domestic opening of 2026. The original The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened to $146.3 million domestically in 2023.
Globally, the film earned $372.5 million worldwide, with $182.4 million coming from 80 international territories across more than 23,500 locations. That makes it the biggest global opening of 2026 and the fifth biggest global opening ever for an animated film. It also ranks as the second-highest global opening for an Illumination film of all time, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Comscore Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian credited the film’s strong debut to its source material and franchise momentum. “The franchise operates in a galaxy of its own in terms of its box office potential, capitalizing on its beloved IP and benefitting from the success of the 2023 film that generated massive goodwill thus adding box office momentum to its opening weekend potential,” Dergarabedian said. “We will look for, as they say in the parlance of video gaming, this film to level up the box office in a big way not only in its opening week but for the entire month of April heading into the all-important summer movie season.”
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ranks as the fourth biggest three-day Easter weekend opening ever, behind Batman v. Superman ($166 million), Furious 7 ($147.1 million), and The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.3 million). Domestically, its five-day total is the fourth biggest ever, behind Moana 2 ($225.4 million), The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($204.6 million), and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($200 million).
