Prime Video has officially welcomed two new cast members to its upcoming live-action series adaptation of God of War, based on PlayStation‘s popular action fantasy video game franchise. This comes over two decades after the bestselling video game was first released. Pre-production is currently underway in Vancouver.
“It follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human,” reads the official logline.
Who is joining the God of War TV show?
Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) has been cast as Odin in the adaptation. Icelandic-American actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance) has also been tapped to portray the key role of Thor in Prime Video’s show. Both will opposite previously announced cast members Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as Kratos and Max Parker (Boots) as Heimdall. More casting is expected to be revealed soon.
According to Thor’s character description, “the God of Thunder is a mountain of a man who has weathered many a battle in his time, but whose actions in a war fought long ago now haunt his waking hours. Once the loyal soldier of Asgard and his father’s right-hand man, Thor is now but a shadow of his former self as he drowns himself in alcohol and tries not to think of the price he paid. Keeping his wife and children at arm’s length has only deepened his isolation, but the power (and danger) of the God of Thunder is still there just beneath the surface.”
The Norse mythology-themed series will be written and executive-produced by showrunner Ronald D. Moore. Emmy winner Frederick E.O. Toye has signed on to direct the first two episodes. Executive producers are Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis. It is a production by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Ahead of its debut, it has also been confirmed that the adaptation is already set to return for a second season.
