It is certainly exciting to see musicians making a cameo in movies or TV shows, but in one case, a disaster was averted after a helicopter charged at the rock band Letters to Cleo in actor Heath Ledger’s 1999 movie 10 Things I Hate About You. The rock band made an appearance in the film and was asked to sing on a roof on a windy day.

The lead singer, Kay Hanley, recalled that the crew was filming with a helicopter and they were asked to keep singing no matter what, but as the helicopter charged at them, they were frightened but they didn’t stop performing, leading to a memorable cameo and shot.

Rock band Letters to Cleo made several cameos throughout 1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You, featuring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. In a 2008 interview with Popdose, lead singer Kay Hanley recalled that one scene in the film that almost killed the entire band,
“So they told us, ‘This is a helicopter shot, and it costs $500,000 every time the helicopter has to take off, so don’t f*ck this up!’ As we started playing we saw the helicopter appear, off in the distance. It’s hard to say how far away it was at first, because we were so high up in the air. But then all of a sudden the helicopter does this dive bomb directly toward us! Is the helicopter out of control? Is it supposed to be coming at us like this? And I’m thinking, ‘Don’t f*ck up, keep singing the song, don’t f*ck up, it costs 500 grand every time the copter takes off.’ It was unbelievably scary – but it turned out to be such an amazing shot.”
The band’s cameos throughout the film went on to become the most memorable musician cameos. 10 Things I Hate About You also became a fan-favorite film, but it was Heath Ledger’s performance that made it special.
