Arsenal fans will to wait until the new year (2026) before they get to see their top defender Gabriel Maghales back in action after picking up an injury.
The 27-year-old picked up the injury while on international duty with Brazil last weekend. He was substituted in the 65th minute of Brazil’s 2-0 friendly win over Senegal at the Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Maghales was seen in pain as he departed the pitch, holding his leg as he walked off.
The Brazilian national team subsequently confirmed the right thigh injury and that Gabriel had withdrawn from the squad and would not be available for the friendly against Tunisia in Lille, France. The Athletic confirme that Gabriel could be out for a long time but initial examinations suggest he will miss a month or two.
The centre-back has played every minute of Arsenal’s Premier League campaign so far and started all four of the club’s Champions League fixtures. Gabriel is not just an asset at the back for the Gunners but also a force in attack having scored 22 times, since joining from Lille in 2020.
He recently signed a contract extension until 2029 in the summer.
Arsenal have seen several players miss time this season through injury, including Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Odegaard, Noni Madueke, and Gabriel Martinelli.
Arteta’s real test comes this week as he will see his side face Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Chelsea in the next eight days.
