Ira Parker, co-creator and showrunner of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, responded to fan concerns about a notable change from George R.R. Martin’s novella. In a recent AMA, Parker admitted the decision to cut a specific scene was a misstep and reflected on its importance to the story’s core message.
Ira Parker on one change from book being a ‘mistake’ in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
During a Reddit AMA, Ira Parker, showrunner of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, acknowledged one change from the book as a mistake. A fan noted the omission of a key exchange between Dunk and Steely Pate from George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight, where Pate tells Dunk, “A knight who remembered his vows.” Parker responded, “Honestly it was a mistake on my part. Not my first, not my last on this show.” He added, “That scene was in the script at one point, then fell out.”
Parker explained that he agreed with the fan’s interpretation of the line’s importance: “I agree that ‘a knight who remembers his vows’ is the soul of this story.” He further clarified, “I think that is still very much at the core of the show, even if I stupidly left out this scene … it may not be said explicitly, but Dunk’s actions remain the same.”
This exchange takes place in the novella at Dunk’s lowest moment. He is on his way to face death in a joust, unaware if any champions will support him. The Smallfolk’s respect and Pate’s line highlight Dunk’s moral core and connection with the people. The moment serves as a thematic pivot in the story.
The team originally scripted the line but eventually removed it during the adaptation process. Despite the omission, Parker emphasized that the show still conveys the same core message through Dunk’s behavior. He acknowledged the oversight candidly: “Not my first, not my last [mistake] on this show.”
The scene remains a point of discussion among fans who see it as a central moment in the source material. Parker’s comment reflects both awareness of its impact and the challenges of translating a tightly written novella into a six-episode format.
