The new GKIDS animated film Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is a delightful film for the entire family. The unique claymation has a tactile charm and handcrafted warmth, with lovable imperfections that give the world a wonderful, tangible quality and capture the imagination. Enhancing facial expressions and visual gags, highlighting the franchise’s near-perfect comic timing.
The film is the third in the trilogy, following 2015’s Shaun the Sheep Movie and 2019’s A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon. And, of course, as a spinoff of Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom finds new, fertile ground in classic monster-movie conventions to expand on the franchise’s trademark dry British humor and affectionate genre parody.

The story follows Shaun (Something Special‘s Justin Fletcher), you guessed it, a sheep, as he and his delightful flock can hardly contain their excitement over the Halloween festivities at Mossy Bottom Farm. However, after their Farmer (John Sparkes of Peppa Pig fame) accidentally, in a very funny scene, destroys his prize-winning pumpkin patch, Shaun puts on his big-boy hooves.
Warning: Sheep-related pun cannon has now been activated.
Shaun channels his inner mad baaa-d scientist because Timmy (also voiced by Fletcher) is heartbroken. To save the patch and the fun, Shaun decides to play Dr. Franken-sheep, turning Mossy Bottom Farm into his own lamb-oratory. The mischievous little lamb creates an ewe-nique formula to regrow the Hulk-like gourds rapidly.

However, like most experiments, unintended consequences occur, rearing their woolly heads. How? Well, for one, Farmer disappears, and what no one else puts together. Of course, an unrequited crush begins to complicate matters, involving Mossingham’s trusted veterinarian (Nina Sosanya), just as a mysterious, hairy, Chewbacca-looking beast appears.
Based on the Shaun the Sheep characters, the new claymation film comes from directors Steve Cox (Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget) and Matthew Walker (72 Hours), working from a script by Mark Burton (Madagascar) and Giles Pilbrow (Submarine Jim). The team combines an entertaining homage to classic horror films with impressive animated physical comedy.
Watch closely, you’ll spot bits pulled from Psycho, Frankenstein, Friday the 13th, and even the decidedly less-than-family-friendly The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Even a dance riff from a famous Michael Jackson short film, a nod to a Steven Spielberg summer popcorn staple, and a reference to the film Jack Nicholson made iconic with an ax and a perfectly timed “Here’s Johnny!”

The team gleefully raids the horror canon, peppering us with affectionate, subtle nods that are meticulously done and never objectionable. The Psycho gag had a direct line to my funny bone. Yet I don’t want to steer families awry. This is gently macabre, all while folding in the classic mix of manic energy, deadpan humor, and escalating slapstick that lands consistently and often.
The result is that Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is addictive, clever, and often hilarious, not to mention full of heart. This is a “monster” movie spoof with no real bite, only plenty of bloody charm. No real scares, just lots of laughs wrapped in soft, wonderfully silly fun.
