Godzilla Minus Zero‘s runtime has set a record for Toho‘s long-running monster franchise. At 135 minutes, the latest installment becomes the longest Japanese Godzilla movie, although a few others in the franchise produced in America are still longer.
The film’s duration was listed on the New York Film Festival’s website before its North American premiere. The length makes director Takashi Yamazaki‘s sequel the longest film produced by Toho’s Godzilla franchise. But the overall franchise record still belongs to Hollywood’s Godzilla (1998). Directed by Roland Emmerich, it is 139 minutes long.
Why Godzilla Minus Zero’s runtime record is a big deal
The longer runtime gives Takashi Yamazaki more room to continue the story that began in the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. This film picks up two years later (in 1949), as Koichi Shikishima and his family confront a new tragedy following their recovery from the old one. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe reprise their lead roles. Yamazaki once again handles writing, directing, and visual effects.
The film represents yet another milestone in the franchise. This is the first Godzilla film shot in IMAX format, as Toho continues to attempt expansion after the worldwide success of Godzilla Minus One.
The first teaser has also raised anticipation for the sequel. It shows Koichi, Noriko, and Akiko enjoying a peaceful life before a new crisis unfolds. The footage ends with Godzilla’s roar and a brief glimpse of it. Without revealing too much, it teases another epic battle.
Godzilla Minus Zero will be available in Japan on November 3, 2026, before arriving in U.S. theaters on November 6. Still, U.S. fans will get a chance to watch the film early. It will have its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26, long before its Japan and North America theatrical release.
