Meccha Chameleon has officially become 2026’s biggest surprise hit, and the sales numbers are hard to ignore. This Japanese indie hide-and-seek game has sold 15 million copies in under a month, which beats this year’s most notable releases, including Forza Horizon 6, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and Pragmata, even when their combined sales are counted together. And to celebrate it, fans are in for a treat as a “famous Japanese star” appears soon.

Meccha Chameleon launched on Steam on June 10, 2026, built around a simple idea: paint your character to blend in to the background and avoid being spotted by the Seekers hunting you down. The game comes from Japanese developers lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro, reportedly made in about two months, and sells for just $5.99.
Its growth since launch has been almost nonstop. The game passed a million copies sold in four days, doubled that within a week, crossed 7 million in under two weeks, with the developer now confirming the 15 million milestone through a Steam community post, thanking players and hinting at an upcoming collaboration with a well-known Japanese celebrity.

We have had some of the best game releases so far in 2026, with behemoths like GTA 6 and Marvel’s Wolverine still awaiting their release later down the line. However, if we were to stack up some of the biggest releases so far, namely Forza Horizon 6, which has sold around 6.4 million copies (via Alinea Analytics), Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight with 1.2 million copies sold in its first week, and Pragmata, which crossed 2 million units in its first 16 days on sale, based on the publisher’s own anonuncement.
Combined, those three titles add up to around 9.6 million copies, roughly 5 million short of Meccha Chameleon total. However, the numbers are likely to shift around as Forza Horizon 6 comes out on PlayStation later some time.
