Before diving in, it’s important to understand what Sony’s PSN account-linking policy is all about. It requires players to link their game to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, even while playing on PC via Steam. Sony says it’s a necessary requirement to support features like cross-platform play, so PlayStation and PC users can play together smoothly.
At the time of writing, Sony hasn’t officially confirmed that Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls requires PSN account linking. However, according to the data listed on SteamDB, the fighting game cannot be purchased or activated in 132 countries and territories.
This includes large parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Even the title’s official Steam page notes that a PSN account and internet connection are necessary. This means that PSN linking is undoubtedly mandatory to play the game. So, if you’re someone who is living in one of the affected regions, it might be a good idea to check whether the title is available in your country before deciding to purchase any of the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls editions.
The reason why these countries have been blocked is that PSN isn’t officially supported there. Sony currently offers PSN services only in 72 countries and territories. That means players in the unsupported regions can’t legitimately create a PSN account. If any game requires a connection to the service, those players are locked out, which forces Sony to remove the title from sale in those markets.
This Isn’t Sony’s First PSN Linking Controversy

Those who have been with Helldivers 2 since day one will remember that this isn’t the first time Sony has found itself at the center of a controversy over its PSN linking policy. Back in 2024, the company announced that Helldivers 2 players would need a PSN account to continue playing the game. The decision led to a review bombing, which eventually forced Sony to reverse course and let players access the game without creating a PSN account.
The controversy resurfaced with Ghost of Tsushima. While a PSN account wasn’t needed to play the single-player campaign, it was necessary for anyone who wanted to access the multiplayer mode. Once again, the game was unable to be purchased in many regions, and the decision drew a lot of criticism.
Sony has struggled to avoid controversies in recent months. The company’s decision to end physical media production has already caused a backlash. Now, with Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls also requiring PSN linking, it appears another issue is just beginning for the company.
