Christopher Nolan reveals why the Cyclops scene in The Odyssey had to be as realistic as possible. The director shared more details on the scene’s creation along with Matt Damon.

What did Christopher Nolan say about The Odyssey’s Cyclops?

Among the many mythical creatures in The Odyssey, the Cyclops Polyphemus holds a pivotal place in the story. For Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the Greek Epic, the man-eating creature had to feel entirely real, a challenge he tackled through various techniques.

Nolan is meticulous with his movie details (like in his scientifically accurate Interstellar), and he wanted to make audience feel the “horrifying situation” of the cyclops scene. In an interview with Empire, he stated, “Everything about the Cyclops sequence is aimed at trying to imagine: what would this be like in real life?”

He did not approach the creature or the scene with perspectives from storybooks or cartoons, but looked at it from the perspective of Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, and his men. He combined animatronics and puppetry with other techniques, including a 60-foot contraption.

The Cyclops’s realism was also achieved by Bill Irwin, who overlooked the voice and puppetry. Irwin is also known for voicing and puppeting the robot Tars from Nolan’s Interstellar. In the interview, Damon recalls, “Bill was doing voices and noises and was with us that entire time.”

Moreover, to make the scene feel “very oppressive”, Nolan filmed the sequence inside Nestor’s Cave in Messenia, Greece. Although there was a “curtain of bees” at the entrance and a “pungent smell” because of the 40 sheep that were part of the scene, filming in the cave felt different to him. He says, “I’ve built a lot of caves before — shooting in a real cave, the feeling is utterly different. Once the rock is moved across the door and you’re in the dark, it’s very, very oppressive. It gave it a sense of reality.”

The Odyssey is set to release in theaters on July 17, 2026. It will retell the famous Greek mythical story through Nolan’s eyes. Alongside Matt Damon, the cast includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Eliot Page, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya.
