Toy Story 5 Cast Guide: Every New and Returning Original Actor

Pixar has yet to drop the ball with its most prestigious IP, and Toy Story 5 seems on track to deliver another timely and relevant story, especially in the current climate. The film will see the toys confronted by the arrival of a new iPad-inspired device named Lily, which threatens their existence and relevance, prompting Woody, who finally found his purpose in the last movie, to return to the gang once again.

With the upcoming Pixar sequel shaping up to be one of the biggest tentpoles in an already crowded summer, here’s everything to know about the movie’s cast, featuring all the returning favorites alongside several new additions.

1. Tom Hanks as Woody (Returning)

Tom Hanks returns to voice the heart of the franchise, Woody, who parted ways with the gang in the last movie to travel with Bo Peep and help other lost toys find a home.

It’s unclear how the upcoming movie will justify his return, especially as it risks undercutting the emotionally resonant ending of Toy Story 4. But considering the rest of the toys will be facing a dilemma similar to the one Woody confronted in the first film, he’s more than well-equipped to help navigate this new situation.

2. Greta Lee as Lilypad (New)

Although the Toy Story franchise has been home to some of the most iconic villains in Pixar’s entire roster, including Stinky Pete in the sequel and Lotso in the threequel, Lilypad doesn’t seem like a villainous force in the traditional sense.

Voiced by Greta Lee, while the frog-shaped smart tablet’s existence alone seems to threaten the relevance of toys, the directors have stressed that Lily still means well. The real conflict will instead stem from the prospect of technology overtaking imaginative play, which feels especially timely in the current climate, where more and more kids are growing up in front of screens.

3. Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear (Returning)

Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story

Tim Allen returns as Buzz Lightyear in the movie, which is set to feature his own substantial subplot involving 50 malfunctioning, hive-minded Space Rangers.Toy Story 4, for all its greatness, didn’t offer much for Buzz to do. He spent much of the movie as a somewhat regressed version of himself, while Woody carried most of the emotional weight and action. With the new movie set to reunite him with his initial rival-turned-best friend, it remains to be seen whether Buzz will ultimately play a more meaningful role in this existential battle for the toys’ relevance.

4. Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants (New)

Conan O’Brien will voice Smarty Pants, an outdated, hygiene-focused potty-training toy with LED eyes, whom Jessie finds at a dilapidated playhouse at Blaze’s Family Ranch.

Because the toilet-paper-shaped device exists in the awkward middle ground between traditional toys and newer, tech-driven arrivals, it’ll be interesting to see how that dynamic plays out. Moreover, given Jessie’s own history of abandonment, along with her newfound fear of being replaced following Lilypad’s arrival, their connection could end up being especially poignant.

5. Joan Cusack as Jessie (Returning)

Joan Cusack reprises her role as fan-favorite Jessie, the most fearless member of the group, who was entrusted with looking after Bonnie following Woody’s departure in Toy Story 4.

While on the surface, she faces a crisis similar to the one Woody confronted in the first Toy Story, her own history of abandonment makes Lilypad’s arrival all the more emotionally heavy for Jessie. If done right, her personal turmoil in the movie has the potential to deliver one of the most compelling arcs not just in this sequel, but arguably in the entire series.

6. Craig Robinson as Atlas (New)

Craig Robinson’s Atlas is another major addition to the group of discarded toys. Similar to Smarty Pants, the cheerful talking GPS hippo toy is a member of Blaze’s toy group.

Although Atlas is laid-back and optimistic, he’s also pretty outdated compared to modern GPS technology, which could naturally lend itself to some of the movie’s more comedic moments.

7. Annie Potts as Bo Peep (Returning)

Annie Potts, who reprised the role of Bo Peep in Toy Story 4, will return in the upcoming movie. Potts’ Bo Peep evolved into one of the most mature and independent members of the gang, ultimately helping Woody discover a new purpose beyond the closet and the traditional life of being owned by a child.

Her specific role in the new movie, however, is expected to be far more minor compared to the previous installment, which isn’t entirely surprising given how many characters the sequel already has to juggle.

8. Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase (New)

In contrast to the several tech-driven toys, Matty Matheson will voice Dr. Nutcase, a homemade daredevil peanut toy sporting a colorful lucha libre mask.

But despite his outwardly fearless appearance, Dr. Nutcase is actually a deeply tech-fearing toy plagued by extreme anxiety, which adds a completely different dynamic to Blaze’s group of discarded toys.

9. Wallace Shawn as Rex (Returning)

Dr. Nutcase won’t be the only toy in the gang plagued by anxiety, as Wallace Shawn returns as the lovable Rex, continuing his three-decade-long legacy with the franchise.

Given how chronically anxious the T. rex has always been throughout the movies, and with every traditional toy now facing an existential threat, it’ll be interesting to see him find the courage to face their biggest obstacle yet.

10. Shelby Rabara as Snappy (New)

Shelby Rabara’s Snappy completes the movie’s trio of obsolete tech, joining Craig Robinson’s Atlas and Conan O’Brien’s Smarty Pants in Blaze’s toy collection.

She is a hyperactive purple digital camera toy with a big lens and endless enthusiasm, and Rabara’s high-pitched, energetic voice serves as the perfect comedic foil to Robinson’s low, rumbling vocals as Atlas.

11. John Ratzenberger as Hamm (Returning)

John Ratzenberger returns as Hamm, the sarcastic, wisecracking piggy bank, joining Woody, Buzz, Rex, and others in the legacy of appearing in every mainline entry in the franchise.

Although he is expected to play more of a supporting role, Hamm’s status as an old-fashioned coin bank in an increasingly digital era fits perfectly with the movie’s overarching conflict between old and new.

12. Blake Clark as Slinky Dog (Returning)

Blake Clark reprises the role of Slinky Dog, which he inherited from Jim Varney, who originally voiced the character in the first two films.

The faithful, stretchy, good-hearted dog has long been one of Woody’s most loyal companions, and he is expected to remain a dependable and helpful presence in this new entry as well.

13. Bonnie Hunt as Dolly (Returning)

Having made her debut as the self-proclaimed leader of Bonnie’s room in Toy Story 3, Bonnie Hunt returns as the level-headed rag doll Dolly in the new movie.

Given her kind, maternal nature, and her role as both the voice of reason and an emotional anchor for the toys, she could prove paramount in helping Jessie navigate the group’s newfound uncertainty.

14. Kristen Schaal as Trixie (Returning)

The bubbly, enthusiastic pink Triceratops is the complete antithesis of Rex, as Kristen Schaal’s Trixie is notably tech-savvy and loves computers.

Given her enthusiasm for electronics and modern technology, it could create an especially interesting dynamic as the toys struggle to come to terms with the arrival of a force they aren’t accustomed to.

15. Tony Hale as Forky (Returning)

After serving as the key focus of the previous movie, Tony Hale’s Forky stands as the complete opposite of modern technology, having literally been created from trash.

Although he overcame his existential dread surrounding his identity in the last movie, he’s still expected to play a vital role in the new adventure, which pits him against the rise of new technology and changing forms of play.

16. Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom (Returning)

Keanu Reeves’ Canadian daredevil Duke Caboom will return in all his glory following his debut in Toy Story 4, where he emerged as one of the standout additions to the franchise’s new cast.

While it remains unclear just how central he’ll be to the narrative this time around, after finally overcoming his lack of confidence in the previous movie, fans can likely expect Duke to pull off even more over-the-top daredevil stunts in the upcoming adventure.

Some major recasts for the movie include Jeff Bergman as Mr. Potato Head, Anna Vocino as Mrs. Potato Head, Ernie Hudson as Combat Carl, and John Hopkins as Mr. Pricklepants.

There are also some notable actors playing various minor roles in the movie. These include Alan Cumming as Bullseye, Bad Bunny as a Pizza with Sunglasses, and Lori Alan as Mrs. Anderson.

Although not every member of the cast may receive the spotlight they deserve due to how packed the movie already is, it’s still refreshing to see so many familiar faces return, especially the ones that helped shape so many childhoods.
