One Piece‘s New ZORO Novel Could Finally Explore His Untold Past
According to the Jump J Book of Shueisha official website listing, Shueisha is set to release a new One Piece light novel titled ZORO on July 3, 2026. As per the latest details available on the website, this volume will include the stories that have been featured in ONE PIECE Magazine, along with completely fresh content about Zoro’s life before joining Luffy and the Straw Hats.

Even though Roronoa Zoro continues to be an integral part of Eiichiro Oda‘s series since its beginning almost three decades ago, there has not been much information regarding his early life apart from his training at the Shimotsuki Village and rivalry with Kuina.
On the other hand, when it comes to other key characters in the series, such as Sanji, Nico Robin, or even Trafalgar Law, fans know far more about them than they do about Zoro, whose story arc has always been left rather vague on purpose.
However, with the ongoing Elbaf Arc pushing the final saga closer towards its conclusion, there may not be enough room left in the main story to fully explore Zoro’s past. Thus, this new prequel novel can help the franchise to explore Zoro’s backstory without interrupting the current plotline.
Jun Esaka’s Involvement Gives Zoro’s Story Massive Potential
One of the most exciting aspects of the ZORO novel is Jun Esaka’s involvement, who was involved with One Piece HEROINES and the adaptation of the One Piece Odyssey novel. The veteran also has vast experience working on the Naruto series after penning some of its novels, including Naruto Shinden and Naruto Retsuden.

Based on Esaka’s previous work, there is no doubt that the new novel will provide fans with an emotional look at Roronoa Zoro’s life. In the manga, he is often portrayed as a stoic warrior whose main goal is to be the greatest swordsman in the world. However, this new novel, based on Zoro’s younger days, might show the hardships and experiences that shaped his obsession with strength and swordsmanship.
Furthermore, the release might have a far-reaching impact on the future of the franchise. The popularity of One Piece HEROINES showed that fans are highly enthusiastic about reading stories focused on characters beyond the Straw Hats’ main journey.
