Transformers: The Movie is set for a theatrical re-release. The controversial film in the iconic franchise is set to return for its fortieth anniversary with an official release window confirmed.

When is Transformers: The Movie arriving back in theaters?

Hasbro, a leading games IP and toy company, has teamed up with Fathom Entertainment to bring back Transformers: The Movie. Released in 1986, the film divided hardcore fans on debut and shocked audiences by killing off fan-favorite Optimus Prime to deliver an epic and unique take on the Autobots and Decepticons.

Over the past four decades, the film has earned cult status despite its box office failure at release. Hasbro now wants a re-release as part of its Apology Tour to bring “fans together to grieve, heal, and reminisce at special fan events all year long, including the film’s return to theaters.” Transformers: The Movie returns to US theatres on September 17, 2026, with a 4K wide release, running through September 21, 2026.

“For decades, Transformers fans have carried this film with them, which is a testament to its storytelling and lasting cultural impact,” said Alyse D’Antuono, Vice President, Global Brand & Franchise Strategy, Action Brands, Hasbro. “Bringing it back to theaters is an opportunity for longtime fans to relive it together, and for new audiences to experience a defining chapter of Transformers history.”

“Few films have had a stronger and more lasting legacy than The Transformers:The Movie,” said Ray Nutt, Chief Executive Officer for Fathom Entertainment. “Even 40 years later, this animated feature film remains a defining moment for fans across generations. Fathom is thrilled to team up with Hasbro to give audiences the opportunity to experience The Transformers: The Movie together in 4K on the big screen.”

As the first feature film in the Transformers series, this 1986 release featured a solid and unforgettable voice cast. Peter Cullen played Optimus Prime alongside Frank Welker as Megatron, Orson Welles as Unicron, Judd Nelson as Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Eric Idle as Wreck-Gar, and Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus.

Tickets for the re-release will be available later this summer at participating theaters. Fans can check Fathom Entertainment’s website for sale dates and details.
