With the latest episode, Nippon Sangoku Episode 7, released on May 17, 2026, on Amazon Prime Video, we entered a narrative that no one expected. While we were all glued to the ongoing war between Seii and Yamato, the episode shifted towards an ambush narrative, focusing on Sugoh’s point of view.

With that being said, the episode was again masterfully animated by Studio Kafka; the lighting, particularly, was top-notch. With that in mind, let’s do a quick recap and review of Nippon Sangoku Episode 7 – breaking down the narrative and production elements thoroughly.

Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains heavy spoilers from Nippon Sangoku Episode 7. Readers’ discretion is highly advised.

Ryumon’s Retreat Creates a Problematic Situation for Sugoh’s Party

The episode resumed with a follow-up from Episode 6 when the Seii army attacked the Kuruzuryu Castle. However, it seems the battle was lost off-screen as the latest episode opened with Wajima declaring that they already won and were prepared to move deeper into Yamato’s territory. Similarly, she also learns about Rymon’s turnaround and return to Yamato.

She commanded her general, Yayakichi Hei, to wait for Aterui’s recovery and march in to face Ryomon and the remainder of Seii’s army. Meanwhile, the news also reached the ears of Muuton Nagao, who immediately ordered the assassination of Sugoh, Tonotsugu, and the other Yamato soldiers resting in the Kaga district.

Shiryo’s Arrival Changes Everything for Yamato’s Dire Situations

As the ambush went on, the soldiers reached Sugoh’s quarters, where he was still tied up. Despite the glaring disadvantage, Sugoh took them on and defeated all of the soldiers when one of them pointed a gun behind his back, ready to shoot. However, Tonotsugu made it there and shot the soldier before he could shoot Sugoh.

A heartbroken Tonutsugu then bows to Sugoh, pleading with him to escort them out of Kaga. Without a word, Sugoh picked Tonotsugu up on his back and started running through the streets before being stopped by Muuton and his men. As Muuton was about to finish them, a shadowy figure with long hair appeared and shot them; it was Yamato’s left lieutenant general, Shiryo Nagamine. Shiryo then carries Tonotsuga and escorts them towards the Sai River, where reinforcements await.

Nippon Sangoku Episode 7 Final Verdict

The Nippon Sangoku Episode 7 was a brilliant installment of Season 1 of the anime, peaking in an excellent war strategy and ambush narrative. It was a fast-paced narrative that stayed on topic, with little to no filler material. What I really liked about the episode was that it went completely off-topic from the main war, but still somehow managed to intertwine with it.

And when it comes to the animation, I have to hand it to Studio Kafka for their lighting effects in this one. Most of the episode was shot at night, and the animation studio did the extremely difficult task of popping every character and expression, without too much light exposure. The movement cues and auto-blurs in the episode are also something I’d like to commend them on.

Overall, the production of this episode was produced in a very balanced and efficient way; no extra visual effects or speed lines were used to convey motion. And the audio cues and the background score sync with the scenes were on point throughout the entire episode.
