The 10 Funniest One Piece Characters, Ranked

Spread the love

When it comes to the One Piece series, we always looked at it as a massive action and adventure saga written by the legendary mangaka Eiichiro Oda. However, what we often overskip is the fact that, just how funny, the series can be at certain points, especially when the comedy is exaggerated in the anime adaptation by Toei Animation.

What makes the funny moments hilarious is the delivery and the characters behind them, who provide us with the comic relief in a vast series like One Piece. With that being said, here are the funniest characters from the series, ranked by just how comedic they are.

10. The Skeleton and Suggestive Jokes From Brook Are Too Hard to Pass

The idea of a living skeleton is spooky on paper; however, Oda flipped the stereotype on its head and gave us Brook, one of the funniest skeletons in anime. Brook’s humor is built on perfect timing and absolute shamelessness; one of his most iconic skits is asking women at random to see their panties.

Even if we keep aside the suggestive jokes, he is still funny – especially with his ongoing skeleton jokes throughout the series. He jokes about eyes popping out, then reminds everyone that he has no eyes; this is just one instance, the series is full of them.

9. Buggy Is the True Embodiment of a Clown in One Piece

The series has a handful of clowns, but none of them can be as funny as Buggy the Star Clown, one of the current Yonko for some reason. Buggy doesn’t necessarily try to be funny in the series, but he has been a gag device for comedy since the Orange Town Arc.

Almost every major achievement he has made comes from misunderstandings, luck, or people overestimating him; the contrast between how terrified he actually is and how legendary the world thinks he is creates nonstop comedy. The “Yonko” status of Buggy itself is an overarching joke of the series.

8. Usopp’s Constant Cowardice and Panic Is a Delightful Watch

It should be clear by now that Usopp is unofficially the jester of the Straw Hat Pirates in the series. While he has his moments of seriousness and action, the comedic skits are just too much to overshadow them. His running theme of larger-than-life lies and running away itself is annoyingly hilarious.

Apart from his constant panic, fake confidence, dramatic lies, and exaggerated reactions, Usopp’s ability to go from cowardly screaming to accidental heroism is comedy gold. And no comments on the nose.

7. Ivankov Brings in a Completely Different Kind of Comedic Sense

Emporio Ivankov from One Piece | Credits: Toei Animation

While the One Piece anime series has been straightforward for the most part, Emporio Ivankov’s entrance in the series added a different perspective to the comedy; a queer scenario was created thanks to Ivankov’s Devil Fruit, the Horu Horu no Mi (Horm-Horm Fruit).

Ivankov completely steals every scene through pure chaos; the over-the-top facial expressions, explosive personality, dramatic poses, and nonstop energy make every interaction memorable. Impel Down, which was a serious and dark narrative overall, received the light of comedy thanks to them.

6. Franky’s Subtle Jokes Are Amplified With His Excessive Energy

Franky, the primary villain turned to a Straw Hat Pirate in One Piece, had a very enthusiastic and over-the-top personality from the get-go. And his over-exaggeration is exactly why his humor works every time he does something.

Everything he does has maximum energy: dramatic poses, random singing, bizarre inventions, emotional crying, and shouting “SUPER!” like it’s a life philosophy. Additionally, even the body modifications he made in the series are a running joke, and the fact that his crewmates treat them as normal creates an even funnier scenario.

5. Chopper’s Cluelessness Makes Him an Adorably Funny Reindeer

There isn’t a single One Piece fan who hates the adorably and cuddly reindeer-turned-doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates. While he has his fair share of emotional and serious moments in the series, he is a running goofball who always does weird things that bring a smile to everyone.

Chopper’s comedy is adorable because he’s terrible at hiding his emotions; every time someone compliments him, and he tries to act annoyed while clearly being happy instantly becomes hilarious. His childlike innocence is what makes him hilarious throughout the series.

4. Zoro Is Unintentionally Hilarious in the One Piece Anime

Fans will never forget the recurring “forgot the direction” gag with Roronoa Zoro that often lands him in awkward positions; his legendary lack of direction alone has created some of One Piece’s funniest moments. If that’s not enough to make you giggle, then we have more.

Add in his dead-serious reactions, accidental stupidity, sleeping habits, and constant rivalry with Sanji, and he becomes one of the series’ best comedic weapons. As Zoro is more on the action side, his created humor is accidental and unintentional, which makes it even more hilarious.

3. The Overdramatic Love-Struck Behavior Brings a Funny Side to Sanji

Sanji from One Piece | Credits: Toei Animation

From the get-go, when Sanji first saw Nami, we knew that this was going to be a long-running skit in the anime and manga series, and so it happened. Sanji’s overdramatic love-struck behavior is one of One Piece’s oldest comedy formulas. However, it still works because Oda constantly escalates it to absurd levels.

From nosebleeds becoming actual plot points to instantly switching from cool gentleman to emotional disaster, Sanji creates chaos wherever attractive women exist. Furthermore, his rivalry with Zoro is another comedic relief in the series.

2. Luffy Is as Funny and Hilarious as Shonen Anime Protagonists Can Get

No one can deny that the main protagonist of the One Piece series, Monkey D. Luffy, is one of the funniest shonen anime protagonists there is. Not only is he hilariously funny and full of life, but he is also a major catalyst for funny moments around himself with others.

He says whatever enters his brain with complete sincerity, which leads to endless absurd moments; the complete lack of social awareness creates iconic comedy moments. The world bends around Luffy’s stupidity, and that’s what makes him hilarious.

1. Donquixote Rosinante Is Unexpectedly One Piece’s Funniest Character

I’m sure none of you guessed Donquixote Rosinante as the number one pick for the funniest One Piece character, and this one is a hidden gem from the series. Rosinante might be one of the most unexpectedly funny characters in the series – nearly every scene involving him ends in complete physical disaster.

From setting himself on fire, falling down stairs, crashing through windows, or accidentally destroying everything around him, the extreme clumsiness mixed with his serious personality creates perfect slapstick comedy. What makes it even better is that beneath all the chaos, he’s also one of the most emotionally impactful characters in the series.
