Robert Downey Jr. is one of the many celebrities who have spoken out against influencer culture. However, most of the celebrities who do speak out against the culture are usually the ones with millions of followers on social media. This makes the comments about the culture from these celebrities have a different meaning.
These celebrities might not be speaking just because they have so many followers, but because they are also a part of this system. Like Downey, which celebrities have been against the influencer culture and social media itself? Here’s the list:
1. Robert Downey Jr. – “People can create celebrity without ever doing much…”

The Oscar-winning actor called out the current influencer culture when he sat down for the podcast, Conversations for Our Daughters. Downey has over 57 million followers on Instagram. He said, deeming these influencers as the future stars is “absolute horsesh*t.” The actor explained,
Nowadays people can create celebrity without ever doing much besides rolling a phone on themselves. I don’t look at that as a negative thing. I just look at it as more like the challenge for individuation is being upped.
Downey shared how he hopes young people want to create something, but don’t tie their outputs to “influencer-type thing”. The actor doubled down and said,
When I hear people talk about, ‘Oh, the stars of the future are going to be influencers,’ I go, ‘I don’t know what world you’re living in, but I think that that is absolute horsesh*t.
Downey talked about his 14-year-old son, who got caught up in this and shared how influencers ask for a donation if the audience likes what they do. The actor is a part of the influencer culture and often benefits from it, making his opinion more credible than sensational. The actor has built his career from being in prison to being one of the most talented actors, and mostly without social media.
2. Emma Stone – “It’s that need to be liked, that need to be seen, that need to be validated…”

Emma Stone has never been on social media and has built her influence without the platforms.
In a conversation with The Los Angeles Times and EPIX’s TV series Hollywood Sessions (via US Weekly), Stone expressed her awe at her peers always wanting to be on social media. She expressed how people’s need to be wanted, validated, and seen through the eyes of strangers feels off to her. She said,
It’s that need to be liked, that need to be seen, that need to be validated, in a way, through no one that you know. And so people ask the question about fame, or what it feels like, and it seems like everybody knows what that feels like. It seems like everyone’s cultivating their lives on Instagram or on different forms of social media, and what pictures looks best of their day.
When being interviewed for her movie La La Land, the actress shared that she feels crazy when she sees social media. She said that not every day is the best day of your life, and that is quite unrealistic. Stone told Elle,
When you see people like, ‘This is the best life ever! I couldn’t be happier,’ you’re like, ‘Shut up, that is not true.’ Not everything comes together in the best way ever, every day. It just doesn’t. Even when your dream you set out for comes true, it’s not always perfect…. That’s not the reality of life.
Stone has built a successful career, and her Oscar record shows she is one of the greatest actresses of this generation, without the help of social media, and her absence from it is a commentary that fans should catch up on.
3. Daniel Craig – “I won’t be going on social media ever in my life.”

Another actor who did not require social media to build his fame or stay in touch is Daniel Craig. The actor entirely dismissed the concept of social media in an interview with The Telegraph and urged people to call each other up and have a drink rather than posting about things on social media. He shared in an interview with Sorted magazine (via Forbes),
I can categorically state that I won’t be going on social media ever in my life… It’s not that I dislike people, It’s more that I just want to have a private life like everyone else who isn’t in the public eye. I don’t get why people want to speak to me or get me to go out with them or anything, anyway. I’m relatively boring and I like my own space.
The actor shared that he would never be on social media. Even an aspirational actor like Craig is against the platform and, in over a decade, has never felt the need for it or been part of the influencer culture. This is the point he is trying to make.
4. Jennifer Anniston – “People becoming famous for basically doing nothing.”

The actress, most famously known for her F.R.I.E.N.D.S. gig as Rachel Green, holds a Guinness World Record for getting one million followers in a short time, breaking the internet. She has over 44 million followers on the platform currently, as of May 8, 2026, but that didn’t stop her from raising her concerns. In an interview with Sebastian Stan on Variety’s Actors on Actors, she shared,
And it was right at the time when the internet really shaped a new culture about people becoming famous. This thing of people becoming famous for basically doing nothing. I mean — Paris Hilton, Monica Lewinsky, all those.
The actress received a lot of hate online for mentioning Hilton in her comment. However, she doubled down, sharing how grateful she was to get into the industry before it changed. The actress is the last of her generation to have gotten famous before the social media platforms came about. She knows what went wrong and what went right with this new invention.
5. Saoirse Ronan – “I was lucky that I just got past that”
Saoirse Ronan does not have any social media accounts and has also shared how she lost some roles because she didn’t have enough Twitter followers. The actress expressed her gratitude for having been a child actor and coming into the industry before the platforms took off. In an interview with Elle, Ronan shared,
I also think I was very lucky that when I was coming up, it was right before social media really took off. I can see, with the slightly younger generation, how they’ve felt the pressure to have that presence.
However, she did understand the need to give importance to the platform. She shared,
But when you’re coming up and nobody knows who you are, and you’re trying to make a name for yourself in the world that we’re in now, I can understand how you can give that too much importance. I was lucky that I just got past that.
The actress has also never felt the need to have social media; instead, she makes waves with her versatile acting skills. She is far away from the influencer culture but still empathizes with people who feel it’s necessary.
