The Legally Blonde prequel, Elle, is set to premiere soon, and it couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Reese Witherspoon brought the character to life in Legally Blonde, which premiered on July 13, 2001, followed by its sequel on July 2, 2003. The original movie celebrates a milestone and will be re-released in theatres on May 24, 2026.

The story of the movie was about a fashionable personality who follows her ex-boyfriend to law school in an attempt to rekindle their relationship. She eventually finds out that she has always been more than just her good looks. The strategy of releasing the prequel series at this time might work with fans, as they may watch the series with the original movies. But what about its cast, plot, and streaming details? Here’s all you need to know:

When Is Legally Blonde Prequel, Elle, Releasing?

The prequel series will be released on July 1, 2026, on Prime Video, in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Interestingly, the release time is significant as it’s around the same time as the original movie’s release. The original movie, released in 2001, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Season 1 will have eight episodes in total.

The prequel feels like something meant to be, as it was deliberately released around the same time as one of the best movies that premiered back then. Prime Video did not just give a go-ahead to its prequel, but to a cultural moment. The prequel is more than just its anniversary celebration; it is a moment fans of the movie have been waiting for.

Who Is in the Cast of Elle?

With Lexi Minetree stepping into the high heels of Elle Woods, the actress beat Madison Wolfe while testing for the role. June Diane Raphael plays her mother, while Tom Everett Scott plays her father, Wyatt, in the prequel. Witherspoon shared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that she got inspiration for Elle after watching Netflix’s Wednesday.

Witherspoon wanted to cast an actor who would do justice to the high school version of the iconic character, similar to how Jenna Ortega was cast as Wednesday Addams, who was in high school. This detail reveals what Witherspoon and the series’ creators wanted, which is more than just a sequel. They wanted to provide fans with the character study of the fashion queen whom audiences grew up loving.

Here’s the list of all the main cast members from the prequel series:

June Diane Raphael as Eva Woods

Tom Everett Scott as Wyatt Woods

Gabrielle Policano as Liz

Jacob Moskovitz as Miles

Chandler Kinney as Kimberly

Zac Looker as Dustin

Amy Pietz as Donna

There are also recurring cast members who were originally a part of the movies:

Jessica Belkin as Madison

Danielle Chand as Shannon

Matt Oberg as Principal Anderson

Chloe Wepper as Ms. Burke

Logan Shroyer as Josh

Sharon Taylor as Robin Walker

David Burtka as Chad

Brad Harder as Charlie Cohen

Kayla Maisonet as Tiffany

Lisa Yamada as Amber

James Van Der Beek as Dean Wilson

What Is the Main Plot of Elle?

The show will follow a teenage Elle in 1995 who will have to navigate her life in an aesthetic that is opposite to hers. Her father’s job leads them to Seattle, which is different from her natural pink habitat.

Seattle in 1995 will be culturally and aesthetically opposite to the main character’s personality. The optimistic and unapologetic character will be placed in this grunge, anti-establishment energy, which will force the character to come out of her pretty pink shell.

This tension will be the plot of the TV series as fans get to see how she develops into the confident, preppy, and smart character she becomes in the movies. Fans can expect the younger version of the happy-go-lucky Woods, who would now be navigating a new place. Witherspoon’s blessing means the series will be just as fun to watch while getting to know how the character grew up to be the confident girl who doesn’t think that studying law is hard.

Is There a Trailer for Elle?

Yes. There is a trailer for the TV series’s first season released by Prime Video on YouTube, which captures the essence of what the plot will be without giving anything away. The trailer starts with showcasing how the fashion queen loves her life in Bel-Air, 1995, when she is told by her parents about the move to Seattle.

The main character breaks down and is seen in the new world, where everything is dull and lifeless compared to her fun persona. The series is created by Laura Kittrell and produced by Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine studios, along with Amazon MGM studios.

While Season 1 hasn’t been released yet, Prime Video has already ordered a Season 2 (via Amazon MGM Studios Press). It’s almost as if Prime Video does not want to know if the series will work; they already decided that it has. This confidence is either in the story or Witherspoon’s brand.

Just like the premise of the movie, it was pushed under the rug for being about a blonde, ditzy character, yet it still received its own prequel series. The character being celebrated years later, around the same time as she came onto the screens, is proof enough that she always mattered. She just needed 25 years for the culture to catch up with her.

Will Reese Witherspoon be a part of the Elle TV series?

No. There has been no official confirmation on the actress being in the TV show.

Who was the original Elle in the 2001 movie?

Reese Witherspoon played the character for the first time in 2001’s Legally Blonde.

Will Elle be available to stream on Disney+?

No. The prequel series will be available to stream on Prime Video.

Let us know if you will be watching Legally Blonde before its prequel series, Elle, premieres in the comments below.

Elle will be available to stream on Prime Video from July 1, 2026.
