After giving us insight into the backstories of Aunt Lydia and Aunt Vidala, we return to the present. The Testaments finally reveals some aspects of the divides between the girls, which could create long-term issues for Daisy and Garth. While the emerging schisms are entirely brought on by the aunts, the ramifications are worth exploring. We also get moments in “Commitment” where Daisy has a chance to become the heart of the show. Following her story after leaving June to join Mayday is a golden opportunity. “Commitment” is a fitting name for the drastically shifting allegiances between the characters.
The Testaments Season 1 Episode 7 Recap
Daisy listens to Radio Mayday while sleeping in the dorms. She remembers her time in the coffee shop before June left, continuing to sit in the breakfast place all night and day. The waitress, Linda, eventually tells her to leave when they close up for the night. When they step outside, the waitress reveals she’s been with June the whole time, and Daisy was being tested. The waitress tells Daisy she’ll bring her to the next stop. In the morning, Daisy hides her radio before the other Pearl girls wake up.
Agnes comes downstairs that morning, discovering that her three matches are all high-level commanders. None of them are Garth. Commander Weston is among the group, but Agnes’ disappointment is palpable. Paula tells her to be thankful while Rosa comforts the girl.
Daisy and Talia are taken to their “treatment,” where their tattoos from life before Gilead are removed. Daisy admits her rose was a drunk tattoo while Talia’s was “Claudia,” her mother’s signature.
Hulda (Isolde Ardies) tells the table about her matches (a commander with beachfront property and another with a 10 handicap in golf). Shunammite asks about Agnes’ three matches, Commander Weston, Pritzger, and Riley. Shu is thrilled for her, especially because Weston runs the Eyes. He is also a widow, but his role requires him to remarry. Becka (Mattea Conforti) reveals her matches were Maddox, a commander from the Colonies, and Garth (Brad Alexander).
After revealing the last, Becka becomes visibly upset. She cannot make eye contact with Agnes and tries to leave. Agnes follows her, telling Becka it’s not her fault that Garth was chosen for her. Becka finally turns around, reminding Agnes that she did not want to be anyone’s wife. Agnes asks Becka not to marry Garth because unlike her friend, Agnes actually wants to be married and have kids.
The room goes quiet when Commander Weston walks into the halls. Aunt Vidala (Mabel Li) stops Weston, asking why he’s present. He reveals there has been new intel recovered from Boston and challenges Vidala if she’s going to stop him from entering. She lets him through. Shu reveals to the other girls that the Eyes are investigating the Mayday attacks.
In a flashback, Daisy wakes up on a stranger’s couch. She’s greeted by Rita (Amanda Brugel), who is working with others to make Daisy a fake passport. Daisy will be sent to Colombia to be rehomed and hidden. Rita reminds her that staying in Canada will keep Daisy in danger. Daisy asks about her birth parents, but Rita tells her they were also killed by Gilead.
Later, Linda drops off the passport to Rita, but Daisy insists on joining Mayday. Otherwise, she’ll find some way to fight Gilead herself. Rita stops Linda from leaving, and mentions June has a plan that Daisy could help execute. Linda hesitates, but Daisy tells them she knows more about Mayday than they give her credit for. Rita asks if Daisy knows if she’s “fruitful” but Daisy reveals that she only knows one girl who has gotten her period.
Rita has Daisy get her rose tattoo for the sole purpose of blending into Gilead. They’ve also gotten her a “sin number” and faked a background story for her. While her real name was not Daisy (it was Marguerite), it’s her new name on the passport. Mayday has made her look like a panhandler. Daisy laughs at the idea of being outsmarted by the women of Gilead, but Rita warns her that mentality will kill her. Those women have been alert in ways Daisy never has been.
In Gilead, Aunt Vidala calls Daisy, Talia, and a handful of other Pearls to speak with Weston. Daisy meets with Weston, who seems to have her radio. He questions her about the school bus shooting. He questions her about her past, which leads to a flashback of Rita prepping her for these interrogations. Among the commanders she was learning information about was Weston, who worked in crypto with a domestic violence rap sheet before becoming a commander. She also learns that June has a child about her age in Gilead.
At the end of her interview, she says the “Pearl Girls saved my life,” which he tells her is not true. He then follows it up with “God did.” After she leaves, Daisy hyperventilates, which causes Agnes to follow her into a classroom. Agnes apologizes to Daisy for leaving her to figure out Gilead on her own, and while the Eyes are trying to help, she understands the stress. She invites Daisy to her house after telling Daisy she admires her bravery.
Daisy walks around an encampment where she gets a free sandwich. Her appearance catches the eye of a missionary from Gilead, who invites her back to the Pearl Girls hotel room. Once there, Daisy watches cartoons and acts antagonistically to fool the girls. After her laundry is dropped off, she gets redressed and ready to leave. However, the Pearl Girls stop her before she goes, saying a prayer for her. This moment helps realize that the girls themselves are not always bad, but they can be for Gilead.
At Agnes’ house, Daisy fawns over the dollhouse and bedroom where Agnes lives. Agnes is curious about Toronto and what Daisy’s life was like. She names a few bands (The Replacements, The Sundays, shoegazing emo music), and they get to know each other. Daisy makes a comment that dating was hard, but at least she got to choose the people she was with.
Agnes seems upset, but she actually returns with trinkets she found in the gardens. She asks what some of them are for, and Daisy lies when she realizes one of the items was used as a crack pipe. However, Agnes catches that it’s a lie and becomes upset that Daisy does not trust her. Agnes goes to get ready for her home visits.
The Greens meet with their suitors in each of their houses. Commander Maddox makes Becka uncomfortable in their meeting, specifically citing her looks. Hulda is given compliments, while Commander Mackenzie (Nate Corddry) feels the first visit for Agnes is insufferable. Garth visits Becka later. He appears genuinely interested in keeping Becka with her friends and family.
Weston visits Agnes’ house, and they discuss his interest in the girl. He asks her if she has any questions for him, and while Paula tries to stop it, Agnes says she hopes he can live up to the expectations set by his first wife. He leaves immediately after, but before he does, he stops and tells Agnes that his wife died in childbirth. It was the worst day of his life. After he exits, Paula call Agnes a selfish girl and threatens to hit her.
Agnes goes outside and spots Garth smoking next to a stairwell. He leaves, and she picks up the cigarette, touching it to her lips. As she does, he returns and jokes, “I thought smoking’s not allowed?” Agnes asks if she has a personality. Garth tells her she does, but then Agnes grows angry that he visited Becka. She returns to the house.
Aunt Vidala tells the Pearl Girls that they need to pray for one of their own, because there’s a deceiver among them. The Eyes enter the room and take Talia into custody. Some of the girls were so scared they peed. At the Mackenzies’ house, Paula goes to speak with Agnes. Rosa wonders to Paula if Weston was the right choice for Agnes. Paula does not want her opinion. She reveals to Agnes that Weston is still interested, despite Agnes’ rebellion.

Daisy prays in her bed, repeating the prayer from the Pearl Girls in Toronto. She remembers the drive from Toronto to Gilead, where the Pearl Girls handed her over to the Eyes. Garth is among those waiting for Daisy. He goes through her bag, making a show of her radio in front of the others. However, he puts it back in her bag. In the present, Agnes takes the cigarette from Garth and hides it in her bag of trinkets.
Is The Testaments Season 1 Episode 7, “Commitment,” worth watching?
Yes, in part because “Commitment” shows just how flimsy the relationships are in every direction. We’ve already had one episode to dive into Daisy’s backstory, but its important to get the story behind her final kick. Leaving us in the cafe still left a lot of questions, and I’m happy The Testaments looped back. However, Halliday does not quite give us the interesting performance we were hoping for. “Commitment” might have been a top 3 episode of the season with that.
Getting a return for Amanda Bruegel in “Commitment” was a nice surprise. While Bruegel was not given the acclaim as some of her peers in The Handmaid’s Tale, her performance as Alma became one of the surest aspects of the show. Bruegel also brings an authentically Canadian voice to the series, where she’s found success on shows like Kim’s Covienance. Even just a couple scenes with Alma was nice and provided a nice update for one of the best characters from the original series.
Perhaps most notable is how bratty Agnes acts in “Commitment.” While she’s one of our favorite characters, Chase Infiniti reminds us that she’s still a very immature character. While she carries her birth as a chip on her shoulder, she’s also prone to lash out without considering the consequences. While we should not feel bad for Weston or Paula in “Commitment.” They’re still scumbags, but it is objectively cruel to taunt someone for being single when they are a widow. Without doing any due diligence, Agnes’ just lashed out, and Infiniti slowly builds to that moment throughout “Commitment.” That’s great acting for a young performer.
Comforti has become one of the surest bets on The Testaments. Her willingness to show genuine hurt had been overused the last few weeks. Allowing her to turn towards hope in “Commitment” was a much needed shift. Garth’s matching was out of her control, and while becoming his wife will hurt her friend, it is the best of all possible matches. Comforti also uses “Commitment” to give one of her best performances since the “Ball.”
Meanwhile, “Commitment” does leave Halliday in an awkward position. She’s not bad in “Commitment,” but she’s also misses some opportunities. We’ve seen her use the same faces and emotional build to hit her moments. Unfortunately, it feels like we’ve seen many of her moves, which could mean some repetitive beats in the episodes ahead. I’m hoping Halliday is holding something back for bigger reveals to come.
The Testaments airs on Hulu and Disney+ every Wednesday. “Commitment” aired on May 6, 2026.
