Mortal Kombat II is set to incorporate one major change from its predecessor, which is a great sign for fans and a strong showing of support from Warner Bros.

In 2021, Warner Bros. rebooted the popular video game franchise with the standalone feature Mortal Kombat. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Mortal Kombat still grossed $84 million on a $55 million budget.

That total might seem on the lower side, but Mortal Kombat was simultaneously released in theaters and on HBO Max as part of WB’s controversial “Project Popcorn.” The gamble paid off, with Mortal Kombat becoming the most-watched HBO Max original movie in 2021.

Why should fans be excited about Mortal Kombat II’s major change?

One of the major criticisms of Mortal Kombat involved the film’s location. Much of the action took place in the fighting pit. Producer Todd Garner explained that the decision stemmed from the film’s budgetary restraints.

“Quite frankly, in the first movie, the studio didn’t know what they had,” Garner said via GamesRadar+. “So we were in that fighting pit for like 75% of the movie, just because of the budget.”

Having seen the first movie’s popularity, Warner Bros. is now more invested in the sequel. The budget has increased to an estimated $68 million, according to The Numbers. Garner also teased that the film will showcase more of the fighting realms that fans have come to know and love.

“This time, we really wanted to make sure that we went to all the different realms that people know,” Garner said.

Many fans are extremely excited to learn that Mortal Kombat II has expanded its cast to include more characters from the video games. The most notable addition is Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, the action film actor who fights for the Earthrealm. Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn are also joining the cast.

Mortal Kombat II’s summer release date is also a sign that Warner Bros. believes in its box office potential. The major studios typically release three to five movies per summer. These films are typically seen as blockbusters that can make hundreds of millions for the studio.

The Mortal Kombat sequel is one of WB’s biggest summer movies. In 2021, Mortal Kombat grossed $23 million domestically in its opening weekend. Mortal Kombat II might double that number, with projections in the range of $50 million.

Mortal Kombat II opens in theaters on May 8, 2026.
