Charlize Theron is one of the actresses who hasn’t become an action heroine overnight, but she has built it one movie after another. From her worst action movies to her best, every single movement she has made has created a cultural impact in the industry. However, this does not always mean every action script is made for her.
With her latest movie, Apex, Theron has added one more action movie to this list. It becomes quite difficult to rank her action movies as Theron has appeared in many. Deciding which one is the best and the worst will be based on the impact it had and the critical reception it received.
Here’s the ranking list for Theron’s worst to best action movies:
11. Fast X (2023)
A still from Fast X | Credits: Universal Pictures
Fast X set an example that every high-budget movie will not be as successful. The movie itself got mixed reviews with a cliffhanger ending and over-the-top effects. Even if the action was pretty cool to look at, the movie did not receive great reviews.

Theron played Cipher and had some neat action packed into the film, but it failed to be as impactful as the rest of the movies on this list. This was to set up the multi-part conclusion of the Fast & Furious movie franchise, which thoroughly failed to impress with action, reviews, and even failed to make an impact, making it the worst action movie that Theron has been a part of.
10. The Old Guard 2 (2025)
In the sequel, The Old Guard 2, Theron got praised by critics for her dedication to playing the role of Andy, an immortal who has to be the leader of immortals just like her. She was originally introduced in the previous movie, The Old Guard. Theron proved that she can do action in all forms. Despite being over 45 years old, she delivered the demanding action sequences impeccably. The lack of a story around her character and the entire plot itself was the problem.

Despite Theron’s efforts to salvage the movie, it wasn’t received as well. However, it did have great viewership on Netflix’s charts, even after receiving negative reviews. This showcased how even if a movie tanks, an established genre could work. Theron proved with this role that there’s no restriction to action heroines after a certain age, but the movie was not the best choice to make that impact.
9. Æon Flux (2005)
Charlize Theron in Æon Flux | Credits: MTV Films
This was the first major action film done by Theron, inspired by the original animated series with the namesake by Peter Chung. It was set in the dystopian sci-fi world that was gaining traction, especially after the release of The Matrix (1999), which changed sci-fi forever. However, the story fell flat for the audience, making this release a skippable movie.

This was due to studio and production interferences that led to director Karyn Kusama being completely sidelined. The movie did not do well despite being Theron’s first major role in an action movie after her Oscar win. At the time, the actress failed to make an impression as an action lead. Theron did not stop here as she went on to work in several superhit action movies next.
8. Hancock (2008)
Charlize Theron as Mary in Hancock | Credits: Columbia Pictures
Hancock had mixed reviews; while some fans loved it, others didn’t. However, it was better received than her first action film. Theron played a mom, Mary, who secretly had superpowers. In a complete opposite role to Æon Flux, Theron had to play a lead who has to suppress her strength and her capabilities.

Critics loved the first half of the film but felt that the second part was different altogether. Theron broke the stereotype of being a blonde who always plays dumb in movies or is cast only as an object of desire. She showcased how even an actress could be an action hero. Still better than the previous movies listed here, but not as much as the next one.
7. Apex (2026)
A still from Apex | Credits: Chernin Entertainment
This recent release placed Theron as an action hero even in her 50s. She plays a grieving widow wanting to find peace through rock climbing. However, little does she know that she has been followed and meets with a villain, who likes to have fun by chasing and attacking people. For fans who want to read our review of Apex can do so.
InfoKey DetailsMovie Title:Apex Director:Baltasar KormákurMain Cast:Charlize Theron, Taron EgertonWhere to Stream:Netflix
Theron had to go through survival training, like rock climbing, kayaking, and more, to do justice to this movie. Apex is getting mixed reviews so far, and critics have deemed Theron ‘almost enough’ to watch the Netflix movie. However, doing stunts even at this age gives Theron its rightful place in the top 10. But she has done better action films, where rock climbing was not the only skill to learn.
6. The Italian Job (2003)
A still from The Italian Job | Credits: De Line Pictures
Before Hancock, this movie was what launched Theron as an action-packed female lead. The Italian Job gained the actress her fallen glory as she played a skilled character who cracked open safes and knew how to do stunts, even while driving. Theron’s role was impactful as the heist genre was dominated by male actors, until The Italian Job.
InfoKey DetailsMovie Title:The Italian JobDirector:F. Gary GrayMain Cast:Donald Sutherland, Charlize Theron, Mark Wahlberg, Edward NortonWhere to Stream:Starz Amazon Channel
This role required Theron to train in stunt driving, and to viewers’ delight, she did an amazing job as usual. Loved by critics for its pacing, character arcs, and strong writing, The Italian Job worked out well for the actress. This is the first in this list to be an overall hit for Theron, as the actress put in an extra six weeks of training for the jam-packed car stunts and delivered them seamlessly, making its place in #6. But when it comes to action, it will be a shame not to mention the next hit that brought Theron into her villain era.
5. F9: The Fast Saga (2021)
Charlize Theron as Cipher in F9: The Fast Saga | Credits: One Race Films
Unlike its sequel, F9: The Fast Saga fared better than Fast X despite having mixed reviews. Theron returned to playing the role of Cipher, the villain, who brings trouble to Dominic and his crew constantly. Along with physical actions, the movie demanded her to be more ‘psychotic’ as a villain.

However, props go to Theron for doing zero-gravity stunts; her physical capability to be one of the best action heroes is commendable. Her stunts are clean and swift while being an absolutely solo villain, bringing chaos. The actress could showcase her range and proved she can be a villain who can fight. This leads F9: The Fast Saga to be in the top 5 on this list. But this movie wasn’t better than its predecessor.
4. F8: The Fate of The Furious (2017)
A still from F8: The Fate of the Furious | Credits: One Race Films
This movie was what introduced her character, Cipher, into the Fast and Furious saga. The movie did not have any hero clashes as Theron was established as the first female villain in the franchise. She seductively worked in the shadows, making her a character who is problematic but only subtly.
InfoKey DetailsMovie Title:F8: The Fate of The FuriousDirector:F. Gary GrayMain Cast:Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Charlize TheronWhere to Stream:HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video
The saga introduced her as a ‘sympathetic’ villain who had charisma and knew how to give a threat with just her voice. She was extremely manipulative and could easily convince you to do something you shouldn’t. Although not packed with action by Theron herself, the movie puts her up against other male villains that have come into the saga. Theron wins easily with her acting in this action movie, making F8 in the #4 rank. But Theron looks much better fighting, which is where the next rank comes in.
3. The Old Guard (2020)
A still from The Old Guard | Credits: Skydance Media
Before The Old Guard, Theron wasn’t considered a female leading action hero; however, this project changed that. Unlike F8: The Fate of the Furious, the actress had to go all in with various stunts with this movie as she played Andy, an immortal leader. Her character was looking for purpose and had to go through all hands-on-deck combat like sword fights, gunplay, and showcase brutal strength.
InfoKey DetailsMovie Title:The Old GuardDirector:Gina Prince-BythewoodMain Cast:Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca MarinelliWhere to Stream:Netflix
Naturally, Theron nailed it and proved she can lead an action movie, as the film received praise from critics. Andy was tasked to lead a group of immortals as she mentors another new immortal. With jam-packed action sequences, Theron went all in, rightfully making this movie in the Top 3 on this list of the best action movies she has been in. However, Theron gets to show off her stunts significantly more when she is without a group as the blonde who can fight.
2. Atomic Blonde (2017)
A still from Atomic Blonde | Credits: Denver and Delilah Productions
The actress finally got her flowers with this hit as she was officially named an ‘A-list action star’ after Atomic Blonde, which is likely what led to The Old Guard. Building on training for innovative fights, this movie demanded long-takes and hand-to-hand combat.
InfoKey DetailsMovie Title:Atomic BlondeDirector:David LeitchMain Cast:Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman, Eddie MarsanWhere to Stream:HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video
Theron played the role of a stylish spy in this action thriller movie. This movie deserves to be in the list because of Theron’s performance, but what puts it in #2 is the legendary stairwell fight, which was a 10-minute single-take fight scene. The sequence showcased Theron’s energy that she maintains consistently and somehow makes it look better with every film. This action movie was almost #1, but the absolute best comes when she’s Furiosa.
1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
The best of all the action movies that Charlize Theron has been a part of, Mad Max: Fury Road takes the cake. Not just for its action, but also for the sheer brutality with which she fights for the women in a nearly silent movie. The chaos of the sandstorm envisioned and created by director George Miller made Theron’s chase scene with Nux, played by Nicholas Hoult, an absolute treat to the eyes.
Theron stole Tom Hardy‘s thunder every time she came on screen to the point where critics were claiming that she would win an Oscar for her performance. With Fury Road, Theron established herself yet again as an untouchable action hero.

Throughout this list, Theron was never blamed for any movie’s failure by critics. She was praised for her dedication, her will to go through with it without using stunt doubles as much. Theron is not just an actress; she is an action female lead who has made waves with her career trajectory in action as well as with her ease in acting.
Theron continues to strive to be the action-packed lead with her latest release, Apex, which is available to stream on Netflix.
