Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World – gave us another amazing episode, that released on April 22, 2026. This episode maintained the quality of the rest of the anime while also proving that Re:ZERO is a horror story. Subaru did not just die in this one; he killed a loved one and then was killed by another loved one.
Let’s recap everything that happened in the 3rd episode in detail, while also reviewing it. Spoiler alert: It was simply amazing.

In the 2nd episode of this season, Subaru successfully managed to navigate the spatial barrier around the tower. However, since someone from the tower was shooting some abnormal magic needles at Subaru and others, Subaru accidentally messed with the magic in the area by creating a space where magic doesn’t work, and ended up falling underground.
The 3rd episode started with Subaru waking up near Ram, Patrasche, and Anastasia. Realizing that they have no choice but to move forward, they started walking together. Soon, all 4 of them started feeling dizzy, which is something Ram and Anastasia practically ignored. After taking a right turn at a split section, and crossing 3 magic gates, Subaru started getting angry when he couldn’t cross the 4th.
Soon, everything started irritating him. Ram’s comments on him weren’t helping either, and he suddenly hit her with invisible providence. It was clear that Subaru is not himself anymore. Subaru choked Ram until she passed out, but then Anastasia came to kill him instead.
Ram was somehow still alive, and she shot Anastasia with her magic, saving Subaru, which caused Anastasia’s body to split in half, as she clung onto Subaru, asking for mercy.
This entire sequence was truly horrifying, but it wasn’t even done yet! Subaru then found Patrasche, who was eating Ram, and then ate Subaru as well. This has to be one of the most horrifying deaths in this anime, as we saw it through the eyes of Subaru. Patrasche’s laugh, right before he lunged at the camera, gave me shivers.

Since, as all the fans now know, Subaru has the power to return from death, he immediately woke up next to Ram as if nothing had happened. He asked Ram and Anastasia about the Witch’s miasma, which they explained is like dark magic power that can’t be absorbed if it is too dense. It is probably the miasma that made Subaru and others lose their mind.
Of course, he cannot tell them what had happened, so this time, he chose the left turn instead. Subaru made sure that he was putting extra effort into keeping everyone calm and happy.
Down that path, Subaru ended up falling into a pit, where there were multiple monsters. However, those monsters looked like puppies in front of the creature that was staying there. That creature looked nothing like anything I’ve seen in any anime before; it looked more like an Elden Ring or Dark Souls boss.
Thankfully, Subaru didn’t have to die twice. To be honest, even if he had gone back in time, then what? There were only 2 paths to choose from. Horror like this makes Re:ZERO one of the best time travel anime. Instead of dying, he was saved by a new character. From the attack that she used to kill that creature, it appeared as if she was the person who was firing at Subaru outside. However, the fact that she said “found you” confirmed it.

This episode was pure horror, and it contained everything that fans love about this anime. Subaru died in a not-so-sudden manner, unlike the last episode. Furthermore, the sound design made the entire sequence of madness extremely creepy.
In fact, the animation team did a really amazing job by deciding to give the Subaru POV during his death. Simply speaking, there couldn’t be a better Re:ZERO episode. My only problem with this episode was that it was so good that it felt like 5 minutes. Anyways, what are your thoughts on this episode? Let us know in the comments.
