Sydney Sweeney would be a great addition to the MCU, if the recent rumors are indeed true.
Sweeney is known for playing Cassie Howard in HBO’s Euphoria, which recently premiered its third season. Last year, she starred as Christy Martin in the Christy biopic movie and as Millie Calloway in The Housemaid. That movie is getting a sequel, titled The Housemaid’s Secret, that is scheduled to arrive in 2027.
A recent rumor that comes from scooper MyTimeToShineHello suggests that Sweeney is now being eyed for a role in the MCU. More specifically, the rumor states that Sweeney could be playing X-Men character Emma Frost, though this has not been confirmed by Marvel Studios at this time.
Why should Sydney Sweeney join the MCU?
While the rumor that Sweeney is playing Emma Frost in the MCU should be taken with a grain of salt at this time, it would be a great addition to the franchise.
Marvel is at the point where they need some new, popular young stars that can sell movies. We’ll see how Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU works out for them when Avengers: Doomsday releases this December; however, what is definitely clear is that they can’t keep relying on nostalgia-based casting in the years to come, especially when considering that a new saga is about to kick off after the release of Avengers: Secret Wars.
Presumably, Marvel will use the X-Men as an opportunity to get some fresh faces in there; getting someone like Sweeney could be a great move long-term, as it could allow for characters to really get to know her character over the course of several projects.
Sweeney isn’t really tied down with any major franchises at this point, either. She’s a well-known, household name — and, yes, there could potentially be more Housemaid movies after The Housemaid’s Secret. But Madame Web didn’t launch a franchise, we don’t really know what’s happening with the Edgar Wright Barbarella movie that’s supposed to be happening, and it’s a true coin toss if the live-action Gundam film she’s attached to will be successful.
Bringing her into the MCU as Emma Frost? Yeah, there’s plenty that could be mined, there, and her casting could really give fans some faith that Marvel is indeed thinking long-term about who will be starring in their next batch of movies.
