The Punisher: One Last Kill trailer is finally here, and we’re pretty excited about what the future has in store for Jon Bernthal’s MCU character.
Bernthal’s Frank Castle/Punisher has been waiting for his big moment to shine in the MCU. He first appeared in the Netflix Daredevil show and then led two seasons of his own series, The Punisher, which was also on Netflix. Though shows, while technically part of the MCU, were pretty independent of any of the big Marvel movies that were happening at the time, as the Netflix shows were largely kept separate from the rest of the shared universe.
Now, with the Disney+ shows exploring new corners of the MCU, Bernthal is back. He previously returned in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, but he’s now getting his own special that will further explore the life, trials, triumphs, and tribulations of Frank Castle.
The Punisher: One Last Kill trailer review
The new Punisher: One Last Kill trailer is making it clear that this will be tonally different than other MCU. Frank seems to be in a lot of pain due to some of his past decisions and, of course, the loss of his family, as he appears to be lighting himself on fire in one scene. Where the story goes remains to be seen; however, it’s clear that One Last Kill, which is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, is interested in not only exploring the character’s flaws and shortcomings, but also in examining how they’ve impacted him in the present day.
Which is to say that, like Wonder Man, this may not be a simple, ‘Here’s a bad guy that needs to be taken down’ kind of story. They seem to be going after something deeper that could really take the Marvel Television special to some dramatic heights.
And a Marvel Television special is a perfect place to tell this story. The Punisher show was mostly good, but it could be a little drawn out at times. Giving Frank a single TV special not only gives Marvel Studios a chance to tell a well-paced story with a beginning, middle, and end, but it also delivers on the promise the MCU once gave us. The Punisher doesn’t have to be connected to Wonder Man. Wonder Man doesn’t have to be connected to Avengers: Endgame. It’s a big universe, and we can explore different stories through different mediums like this. Werewolf by Night introduced that idea in 2022, and then there hasn’t been another special presentation like this since The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
