Given how informational the episode was overall, the start totally threw me off guard. Dorohedoro never fails to amaze me with its out-of-the-blue story progression. Like, what do you mean Risu’s past Cross-Eye colleagues are trying to cover up a murder, which isn’t much related to the main story, but at the same time is extremely funny?
That was a peak Dorohedoro moment right there. Now moving on, I must say there were plenty of crucial story moments in the episode as well. It wasn’t all just for fun. Let me tell you which ones I’m exactly talking about and my opinion on them.
Asu’s Death Felt More Traumatising After Knowing Nikaido’s Past
For a brief moment, the episode showed us a devil meat shop out of nowhere, and I was left thinking, was it necessary? But oh boy, little did I know, Asu’s flesh would be sold in the same store.
How did it escalate to this extreme? Well, basically, Asu got caught by other devils for helping Nikaido. Technically, that’s forbidden by devil laws. Well, devil laws themselves are a little hard to understand, but this time, it apparently wasn’t.
Then the meat shop owner was brought to the execution site, and he literally shredded Asu’s body into pieces. That was gruesome to even look at. I almost couldn’t watch it. But guess what? There was a shocking revelation right after.
It turns out Asu was actually a sorcerer in his previous life named Kawajiri. So after cutting Asu’s body, now only Kawajiri is left in one piece, who is later discarded from hell to return to being a sorcerer!
While this was shocking, there’s actually more. When Chota finds Nikaido’s special diary, it is revealed that Kawajiri had been like a brother to Nikaido when they were young. Now it all makes sense why Asu was so protective of Nikaido. The dots are connecting.
En Finding Out Chota’s Disguise Would Stir Up the Storyline

The episode also tested my patience quite a bit, because Chota didn’t read Nikaido’s full backstory in one go. Like, what do you mean he just got bored? That was preposterous. But when he does start reading again while taking a bath, more things get revealed.
The episode highlighted how Nikaido, Kawajiri, and Yakumo grew up together (I don’t know much about Yakumo, though). Their bond was quite strong. We even saw how Nikaido kept training since she was a kid, despite not knowing what her magic could exactly do.
Well, that didn’t even get revealed by the end of the episode, but something else was. Chota got caught! En rushed into the bathroom where Chota was, and since Asu died, Chota’s disguise came undone. And at that very moment, it was Joe-over for Chota. He almost turned Chota into a mushroom! But, En ain’t that bad of a guy, so he didn’t!
Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 4: Final Verdict

The ending of Season 2 Episode 4 really got me invested in what will happen next. It also hints at solving the bigger picture of Caiman’s true identity. I think Nikaido’s past will further help with that. And, of course, the metal punk vibes of the series remained in this episode.
Even I must admit that the opening and ending soundtracks are growing on me the more I listen to them in every episode. The initial complaints I had with the CGI animation are also fading out, as now, I’ve come to accept it as just another animation approach. Thus, based on the story pacing and the crazy amount of gore and revelations in the episode, it definitely deserves a high rating.
Dorohedoro Season 2 is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
