Netflix’s new South Korean action spy film, Humint, brings together South Korean and North Korean intelligence agents as they attempt to dismantle an international criminal conspiracy taking place in Russia. Written and directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, the film stars Zo In-sung, Park Jeong-min, Park Hae-joon, and Shin Se-kyung.

The film focuses on a South Korean national intelligence service manager, Manager Zo, who is informed by a human intelligence agent, Soo-rin, about a huge conspiracy involving North Korea and Russia. They were not just smuggling a drug called bingdu but also running a human trafficking chain.

When he discusses this with his senior, he is asked to immediately go to Vladivostok, where the rest of the film takes place.

Who is Park Geon and His Relationship with Seon-Hwa?

Park Geon is a North Korean state security officer who is in Vladivostok to investigate the rampant disappearance of North  Korean citizens there. At first glance, he represents the machinery of the state. However, his façade begins to crack when he encounters Chae Seon-hwa.

Seon-hwa is not just another person missing; she is his past. The film reveals that the two were once lovers in North Korea, separated by circumstance and survival. After her father’s death, Seon-hwa leaves the country to earn money for her mother’s cancer treatment.

However, this ultimately leaves her entangled in a brutal network of exploitation in Russia. She is working in a restaurant where she has to drug them and engage in s*xual exploitation. Moreover, to get money for her mother’s cancer treatment, she is recruited as an intelligence asset for South Korea by Manager Zo.

Who is Hwang Chi-seong in Humint?

If Humint has a true villain, it is Hwang Chi-seong. A North Korean consul general stationed in Vladivostok, Chi-seong, operates under the guise of diplomacy. But beneath that polished exterior, he is a key architect of the human trafficking network linking North Korea and Russian criminal organizations.

When Park Geon begins investigating the trafficking ring, Chi-seong quickly recognizes him as a threat. He eliminates witnesses and manipulates evidence. He embodies how corruption can thrive within institutions, protected by power and secrecy.

What Does Hwang Chi-seong Want From Park Geon and Seon-Hwa?

Park Geon, during his investigation, finds out a North Korean broker and arrests him. But before he could get a confession, Hwang Chi-seong had the broker killed and had a fake confession note written. Moreover, he also figures out about Park Geon and Seon-Hwa’s past attachment and wants them both framed.

Chi-seong, in order to save his profitable side hustle, has his men spy on both of them. He wants to prove that Seon-hwa is spying for the enemy and wants to frame Park Geon as unfit for service.

First, he gathers security footage of Seon-hwa and tries to prove this to Park Geon. While Park Geon tries to help Seon-hwa, she is taken away on the pretext that she is being sent to North Korea, but instead she is handed over to the Russian mafia boss.

Park Geon remains oblivious of this fact, but Manager Zo follows the car that Seon-hwa was taken away in. Once there, she is held in bulletproof glass cases along with dozens of North Korean women caught in the illicit trade. The glass case is used to hold them captive and also ship them around the world.

In the midst of all this, the cruel and corrupt council general also managed to frame Park Geon by getting a false confession and trying to arrest him.

Why Does Manager Zo Want to Save Seon-Hwa?

Earlier in Humint, Manager Zo had learned of the criminal syndicate through a human agent named Soo-rin. However, Soo-rin met a cruel fate as she was trafficked and abused. Zo attempted to rescue Soo-rin after witnessing her being beaten and injected with drugs. Although he manages to bring her to safety, she dies from her injuries. This event affects Zo’s approach to future missions.

When Zo identifies Seon-hwa as a potential human intelligence source, he begins monitoring her activities. Despite concerns from his colleague Agent Im, who suspects Seon-hwa might be working for North Korea, Zo continues to trust her. He arranges support for her as well as medical assistance for her mother.

So when he learns that she might be in danger, he begins tracking movements around her workplace and the consul general’s office. He notices unusual activity and decides to follow the situation instead of withdrawing from the operation.

Did Manager Zo and Park Geon Join Hands Against the Russian Mafia?

Park Geon already knows about the South Korean intelligence officers, Manager Zo, and his partner Agent Im. He finds out their apartment and demands to talk to Zo. Zo instead tells him about the human trafficking chain and that Seon-hwa has been handed over to the Russian Mafia as well.

While he refuses to believe Zo at first, Park Geon accepts the bitter truth once he sees the pictures. Later, Park Geon joins Manager Zo at the mafia facility to free the women. Together, they engage in a coordinated attack against the mafia members.

Meanwhile, Seon-hwa manages to free the other captives. Park and Zo eventually confront and eliminate Alexei Sokolov, the head of the mafia.

How Does Humint End?

After eliminating Alexei, they thought the worst was done, but as they were getting out of the facility, Chi-seong and his men showed up, firing bullets and aiming to kill them.

Zo and Park Geon once again got in action and had the girls take cover. While some of them unfortunately got shot, Manager Zo and his North Korean counterpart struggled against the consul general and his men, even though Agent Im showed up to help them.

At the end of Humint, the unlikely duo manages to surround the consul general, but in a bid to escape, he shoots at them both. This led Zo to shoot Chi-seong, and he died. However, Park was also fatally injured, but whispered something in Zo’s ear before he passed away. It is later revealed that his final words expressed his desire to live.

Following the incident, Zo submits a report detailing the trafficking network, including its involvement in drug distribution, exploitation, and illegal operations generating significant revenue.

Seon-hwa is later extradited to Japan, where she is questioned by South Korean authorities. Arrangements are made to bring her mother out of North Korea, but her mother dies during transit. After these events, Seon-hwa relocates to Europe and begins working at a church. She does not seek compensation and chooses to live away from her past.

However, Manager Zo continues to work as an intelligence officer, maintaining his role in handling human intelligence operations and keeping an eye on Seon-hwa from a distance.

In the end, Humint isn’t just about espionage. It is about the cost of being human in a world that often forgets what that means.
