Invincible, Season 4, Episode 4, Hurm, was pretty low with its stakes. It had a self-contained story, which we now know was simply the calm before the storm. Episode 5 brought all the emotions fans expected, and also updated some elements from the comics. Nolan spoke to Mark, Allen and Eve bonded over his cat, and Debbie made it abundantly clear that she has more of a grudge against Nolan than her comic counterpart ever did.
What’s more, the story introduced fans to Tech Jacket, who has also been updated for the show. Between the emotionally poignant first half and the bombastic action that greeted fans in the second half, Episode 5 has the entire narrative, thematic, and visual thesis of what Invincible is all about front and center.

The expertly crafted first half of the episode saw Nolan trying to make amends to those he genuinely cared about. Of course, he did not try to reach out to Immortal and Cecil, but surprisingly, he went to Art after he finished talking with Debbie.
Debbie took a different approach from the comics when dealing with Nolan. While the comics saw them reconcile almost immediately, the show depicted Debbie not only standing her ground but also actively choosing Paul over Nolan. Further, while Oliver was very happy to see Nolan in the comics, the character is given much more depth in the show. His conversation with Art, in which he talks about Paul and Oliver, compels audiences to feel for Nolan, despite his shortcomings.
Tech Jacket being gender-bent as a surprise, but Zoe Thompson was instantly likable, able to wield her suit in some very fun and ingenious ways. The show was also filled with some humorous interactions, such as Eve discovering that Allen’s cat actually has two buttholes.

The best episode the show has offered since the Invincible Season 1 finale, Give Us a Moment, takes its time setting up its pieces. The first half of the episode deals with the fallout of Omni-Man’s return in a very concise and sophisticated manner, something lesser shows might have spent too much time on. It hit all the correct beats with all the right characters.
The highlight of the episode was Mark’s rematch with Conquest. The initial fight between the Coalition and the Vilturmite Forces was brilliant in its conception, showcasing the abilities of all the fighters recruited. and why they were chosen to fight Viltrumites in the first place. However, when Mark intercepted Conquest before he could hurt Oliver, that is where the real meat of the story came in. This fight showed how far characters like Mark and Oliver had come, given that they were able to tank blows from Conquest that put them on the back foot the first time they fought him.
When Conquest was intercepted by Mark before the former could reach Oliver, he lived up to his name, taking blow after blow from the behemoth. Through it all, even after being disemboweled, Mark made sure that Conquest did not draw a single breath, finally succumbing to asphyxiation. The episode ends on a brilliant cliffhanger, leaving Mark’s fate in the balance. How are Omni-Man and Oliver going to aid Mark without the Coalition’s help? Invincible Season 4, Episode 6 will definitely feature a funeral.
