Galactus is one of the most powerful forces in the reality of Marvel. The Devourer of Worlds is also a canny foe, whose destruction is avoided only because he is necessary to the orderly working of the universe. However, an unexpected enemy was able to destroy him in a recent What If…? style story. And while the Fantastic Four were on hand to witness the event, they were not directly responsible for the death of Galactus.
The death occurred in Godzilla: Infinity Roar #2, by Gerry Duggan, Javier Garron, and Ig Guara. A sequel to last year’s Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe, the sequel finds the King of the Monsters teaming with Knull, the god of the Symbiotes. Together, they begin cutting a bloody path across the Marvel Universe, making their way towards Earth.

After destroying the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, the two turned upon the Shi’ar Empire. An unexpected savior arrived, as the Fantastic Four alerted Galactus as to what was going on. The Devourer of Worlds had two reasons for facing the King of the Monsters. First, Galactus hoped that the primal energy that sustained Godzilla would be enough to satisfy his endless Hunger. Secondly, he hoped that at least one Marvel civilization would view him as a Bringer of Life rather than a champion of Death.
How Godzilla killed Galactus, Devourer of Worlds
At first, it seemed that Galactus’ efforts to absorb the power of Godzilla were successful. The same technology that atomized whole worlds and transformed them into consumable energy made short work of the King of the Monsters. However, the hopes of the billions of beings in the Shi’ar Empire were quickly dashed, as the cells that constituted Godzilla reassembled within Galactus’s body.

The end result was messy and quite lethal for Galactus. The Fantastic Four were forced to flee, leaving the Shi’ar to face their doom alone. The issue ends with Odin gathering the armies of Asgard and Hel to face the threat posed by Godzilla and Knull. It seems unlikely, however, that the Allfather will fare any better against the King of the Monsters.
